The indent in their legs is the joint in equines that corresponds to a human's heel. Everything below that point is technically a foot (in terms of human bone structure, that is.) Above that, the thighs and calves are actually very short.

Well...all four legs would technically need them. It's just more visually noticeable in the back legs.
