All your tutorials are wonderful, they're some of the easiest I've found to follow, while going into enough depth that you actually learn!
Sorry for the fave spree <3

Another great tutorial. : )
I've got a question about Sketchup. I checked its license for the free version and it says it's only for non-commertial use. It means I can't sell anything created in that program but can something made based on it be sold? I know they have no way to check it.

I think you could sold something based on it 'cause first, nobody will never knew if it has been created on SketchUp or not ( except youΒ Β ) and secondly this is not SkecthUp that you show, it's your drawingΒ Β

Ahh, reeeeal sweet! I have the annoying habit of picking "correct" colors for everything. This mostly confuses the eye, seeing there's no pointer towards what's important and not. Thanks for sharing!

OOSHIZ - I have just gone through like half of your tutorials before realising that you're the guy who did The Meek. I thought your art style was familiar...
Anywho, love these tutorials. Would like the webcomic to start again, but I get that its not looking likely now..
Also, loving the chinchillas.

LOL I feel like an idiot but after seeing Step 05. I went back to The Meek - 3.07 and checked to see if there was actually a chinchilla in the background. I was slightly surprised when I found out that the scene was lacking chinchilla. xD

This is totally awesome and inspirational. I used the sketchup and coloring stuff on a comic I've been meaning to start for forever: [link]
A couple questions--do you use the dark-to-light technique for everything, or only in dark scenes like this? Also, how'd you determine the base color you started with?

shingworks In reply to theta-ix [2012-02-01 07:10:54 +0000 UTC]
Depending on what kind of coloring you do, you want to use a different technique. Sometimes it's nice to have a light color coming through from below, for example you can look at `loish since she's done that a few times on her rougher paintings. Basically you should experiment and find out what looks best for the mood you're trying to achieve, it helps to work from a photo ref or even another artist's work if you find it helpful or inspirational.
You should set the base color based on the mood of the piece. This doesn't always need to be the base color of the piece if you're painting over it. Like for a night scene, you might be tempted to use blue at the base. I might go for bright purple instead and paint blue over it, you'll get a more interesting feel out of it than if you went with the more simple choice. For painting skin you could paint bright orange on the body first, like light through blood, then add skin on top. That will give the skin more life and vibrance (just some examples, and of course variations are extremely useful as well).

Generally, we make concept art before we model them, but you say we should model them first? PARADOX!
π: 0 β©: 1
shingworks In reply to Wolfos1232 [2011-12-13 16:16:36 +0000 UTC]
Model them before you draw them, at least. You should probably concept first, but for the purposes of this tutorial I had a pretty good idea in mind of what I wanted already so the sketchup phase was the same as the concepting phase.
