How long does it normally take you to do shading?

Entirely depends on what I'm drawing

like a whole picture or a single page of a comic

for the miamaska comic: i average about one and a half hours for basic rendering (which is cel-shading to start, then going back and softening some edges), then i spend another hour polishing (which includes highlights and non-shading details like hair strands and fabric textures). that's usually for 8 characters on the page. but that is a completely separate technique for shading that i discuss a little more on my tumblr here: [link]
this style of shading without the use of multiply layers and the like really does depend on what i'm drawing, there's no simple answer. most of the time there is no actual "shading stage" in the drawing, it's constantly painting it and adjusting the lighting until it's right for me. like i don't sit there and draw the line art then the flats then start on the shading as i do with a comic page, it's all painting from the very beginning.
hope that clears things up!

Wow, that's a lot of work but yeah I understand what you mean. You know I've always wanted to be professional artist but after seeing just how much patience I would need I long ago realized it was just going to be some hobby or mine.

Drawing started as a hobby for me, and even though I still consider myself more a hobbyist than a professional, I make enough money off of it to not need a day job. So I say: keep with it, you never know where it might take you :--)

Well thank you for the advice I really appreciate it and I love your work and how different all of it is and all the styles you have. It's amazing to look at.

I will only save up money for PS when I know it's worth the money, that I can translate what I do to a computer with any real skill. Here's an example of my GIMP work: [link]

GIMP is pretty versatile, i don't know if any digital artist even needs to buy photoshop now-a-days. i'd say look up some tutorials and figure out how best to use gimp. that drawing you linked looks like it has a lot of accidental mistakes like little white blips and spots that could be prevented by learning more about the program.

exactly! I don't know the ins and outs so my attempts have always had white pixels or dots around the lines

That is such an interesting midtone tips at the end there! Awesome! I will use it in my next sketch for sure.
I'd love if you ever stop by my profile and give your thoughts on one of my pieces. I could certainly need some direction.

OMG finally where has this been for so long... a tutorial that does not require pen pressure lol i just have one quick question when painting do you use a normal 100% flow 100% opacity and 1% spacing for the base so that you can get like say the edges of the face and then use this technique when blocking then blending the shades and highlights ? and then what about edges for like the nose and around the eyes?

oh - did you notice that if you press alt with the brush tool active, it will turn into the eyedropper until you let go? In case you did, a couple other workflow helpers could be '[' and ']' to control brush size, and space bar to use the hand tool to navigate when you're zoomed in!
Sorry if you knew all these!

I'm glad you had a saturation in the gradient (middle tone). Cause there's so many people that get the blending wrong and just blend two colors together.
I've been thinking of giving Corel Painter a shot since photoshop don't actually blend stuff. Corel painter confuses me though.. guess it's cause I'm so used to PS.
Good tutorial!
I'm blabbing!
Aaah!

yeah, the automatic blending abilities in Painter are a lot nicer than photoshop's. you should definitely try it out, though there are a ton more tools to get used to. I still haven't figured out a regular way of working in that program!

Yeah, same thing for me. I don't even get half of all the stuff that's there.
Neither have I tried the mediums it tries to mimic.

I hoped it was done like that, time consuming but worth the efforts!
Make sure to use AT LEAST 3 colors to blend, as just using a dark and a light doesn't work as great!
