I liked the concept of the Gorgons in the Magic the Gathering series, where apparently they can look at anyone normally, but then they could 'charge up' a eye-blast that turns flesh into stone, sort of like Cyclops from X-Men, IE, once out and hitting things it cannot stop nor reverse any damage done.
