Description Another shot from last Tuesday, taken while I was waiting for my train at Duisburg Central. Kinda liked the curved tracks in the foreground, and the snow of course.

Well, what can I say about the train... It's a class 425 EMU. Probably my least favourite German train ever. It doesn't look good, the seats are the worst of all trains, including wooden benches from museum stock, and it's horribly noisy inside. That wailing scream from the power electronics is just so penetrant, and you can't just hear it, but you can actually feel it vibrating through the floor/seat. Here's what it sounds like, with the first and last twenty seconds being the most representative ones for the typical whining noise that gave these trains the nickname "Quietschie".

We've received some more snow since then, in fact, it's snowing as I'm writing this. However, it's Sunday, so not much traffic, and it's dark already, so photos will have to wait till tomorrow. Looks like it's back to my old practice of not going on photo tours, but just shooting what comes by during my daily commute to Duisburg. And as you can see, not much interesting stuff comes by these days, since the classes 110 and 143 have disappeared from Duisburg.

Interestingly, while standing around and listening to the announcements about cancelled trains one night, I could spot several 143 hauled S-Bahn trains dashing through, empty, with blank destination indicators. Seems as if the properly built trains are indeed winter-proof, heading out to rescue stranded passengers.

Snow and railway infrastructure = a marvelous connection.

If really on German rails modern, worse constructed vehicles are replacing older, but better ones it's very sad...

Of course! My favourite is still snow + speeding train though... [link]

It's a common problem that more modern vehicles are less winter-proof, not because they are modern, but because the buyer doesn't want to spend much money on them, cutting corners, which leads to problems later on. Explained it in a comment here: [link]

It looks people in railway management has very little imagination... or responsibility. Or both.
