Well, I constructed Kaze differently, mind you. With him, I used the tablet to construct shapes and then the smudge/warp tool to push them into the shape I desired. I actually didn't use any of the basic vector construction tools. I also wasn't using a pre-drawn image to base him off of.
For this, I didn't use my tablet at all, instead constructing the outlines with the pen tool point by point to practice using basic vector construction skills (which would be necessary for the job I'm applying for). I'm not sure what you mean by your comment with the bangs....
As for the gradients, nobody likes them in Illustrator. They suck, but I wanted to go to bed at a decent time last night so I got lazy and gave up. I put 10 hours into this and I didn't want to touch it again.
BTW, as a side note, do you have ANY idea of how to use the mesh tool correctly for gradients??? I can't find any tutorials online and it's driving me nuts.

i played with it before on the mesh tool. i know people from previous classes that can use them very well, but imo its not worth the time and effort. lol. basically you click on a point in the mesh to chane the color, then u go and 'edit' the curve of it. way too time consuming for my taste.
About the bangs, the way how you outlined it is kinda sloppy, how the gaps between them and all. what you can always do is use the pen tool and draw as u will as a regular anime outline, then traceoutline for the lines, then merge compound objects together to make it one big outlined black lines. then u go on a layer under it to create another shape for coloring
hope that helps!
