I thought about coloring them, but with my lack of background drawing (and the fact that lined paper smears too much) it wouldn't really look right...

Try doing it on the computer. Use MS Paint, Gimp, or whatever you have.

All I have is the basic paint that comes with the comp; it's what I used to color my avatar, but even that took me 4 hours...
