Here's my entry for a Godzilla challenge hosted by arvalis on his Discord server! The task was to make your own version of Godzilla.

I'm not super familiar with Godzilla and I wasn't exactly sure how much I could push the official designs so I decided to follow the ”have fun” rule of the challenge and do something based on what inspires me at the moment.

My version of the Godzilla is designed to be a freshwater creature. Lately I have been drawing and researching creatures in Finnish mythology and for some reason I really liked drawing pike-inspired creatures. The pike is a powerful fish and it's considered to be able to pass between the land of the living and the underworld. So, why not try and apply that to this beast and see where it takes me.

Another inspiration was HBO's Chernobyl mini-series. I'm from Finland myself and while I've known about Chernobyl for a very long time and know that there's still radiation in Finnish nature that series made a huge impact. Maybe partially because it didn't happen that long ago and not that far away. All this made me think that maybe a radioactive fresh water beast would be pretty cool as well.

The freshwater Godzilla are a lot smaller than the ones dwelling in the depths of the ocean but nothing to underestimate. They are very adaptable but spend most of their lives staying in one lake or a very deep river. While most of the radiation is contained within them their presence has the potential of contaminating an entire water system. They can travel within the same body of water and therefore reach a lot of places inland. However, they posses the biggest danger in water. They mostly have smooth skin and brilliant, sparkling and glowing fins and patterns.

I had a ton of fun with this! I hope you like it!

I love the idea! Pike are super cool and interesting fish, as a kid I was horribly afraid of getting bitten by them when swimming in lakes, probably after reading some stupid article on a newspaper XD

Thanks! I was also afraid of pikes as a kid but I loved swimming in a lake so much that I did it anyway.

Those yellow-green spots almost make it look radioactive by itself. You did a great job making a fantastic beastie. ^_^

Aw sweet, I love Godzilla! And I like pike as well, they're like freshwater barracuda.
Nice usage of light and color here, this totally looks like a still image from a fishing show or something. Those motes blurring as they get closer to the 'camera' are a nice touch of realism.

You might like Shin Godzilla's design, they based it off of a (very) mutated sea creature rather than a dinosaur. The tadpole form is especially derpy and adorable.

Very interesting concept. Taking account of its freshwater nature, this design brings reminds me of the Loch Ness Monster or Creature of the Black Lagoon thanks to its more amphibious biology

Its a shame how much I hear people aren't familiar with Godzilla until it got adapted

But I do love Pike.

I assumed when you mentioned Chernobyl it was the River Monsters episode which is awesome.

This is awesome!
Also, loved the Chernobyl series. Wish there was more to watch, but I'm glad the show runners didn't try to stretch it out for the sake of TV.

I misread this as "Pikazilla" at first and was trying to figure out which aspect of the design was based on Pikachu XD

Other than my silly mistake, this is amazing! Definitely would not want to run into one. Radiation can cause such bizarre mutations but to imagine how mutated animals might look like is both exciting and terrifying!
