18, barely. He had been young. But he was as careful and distant as a man twice his age, a man that had seen too much and done much more. Nobody could tell, he rarely talked to anybody. No friends coming over, doing whatever 18 years old teens did, no family waiting at home. It was just him and her most of the times. But there had to be more, another time before he stopped sleeping, before he closed others out. Was it closing out? Naru never knew then, but now, in the dim present day, she was fairly sure.

There was that place, he visited sometimes. And he was just standing there, looking grim and bitter and somehow unbelievable sad. It was one of the rare moments, where he showed any weakness. Because Kayin was never weak. Naru had seen him in all states of being hurt, bleeding and cut and beaten. But never weak, not like at this place far away from the cities. But he never mentioned it to her, never told anything and she was afraid to ask.

And after everything, after years without his comfort, it was the look in his eyes she remembered the most and she wondered if everything he had done for her, had a price that was far too high to bear. Yes, it was just him and her and while Kayin had be the perfect father, she often wondered if she had been a good daughter too.
