Description This isnt a pic i got on the internet. I actually went to Paris at the Cimetiere Du Pere Lacaise and I walked LITERALLY with one shoe on (because my other sandal tore) for about 2 hours until I found him. It was a bittersweet moment. I was excited that I saw him, but also sad that he was there...

I'm in my first year of college as well and I agree it's a pretty nice cemetery. The French really respect the dead (or at least the famous ones)

As I understand it, the cemetery administration plans to move him to an unmarked grave because of all the vandalism to the surrounding stones.
I am envious you got to go there because it's a cemetery I really want to visit.

It's not just the adjacent ones, but the Lizard King's grave itself has been vandalized. A bust use to sit where that basket is, but it was stolen. I believe they tried to dig him up as well.

Its a gorgeous cemetery. When I went, it was very cloudy and a bit chilly, but I felt tranquility despite the fact I was surrounded by death. Seeing Jim was a bittersweet moment for me, because I admire him as a singer and poet and yet he had to die so young.

Apparently there is a maintenance fee that must be paid and has lapsed, therefore the grave enjoys no protection.

Actually, fortunately, I found out that his estate managed to get a perpetual endowment for its upkeep, but too late to prevent the vandalism. Legally, the cemetery had a right to disinter any delinquent site and lease it to another paying customer.

Pere LaChaise was intended as an exclusive celebrity cemetery, figuring that only the rich and famous could afford to stay there (this was before the practice of emptying cemeteries for newly deceased was outlawed).

Selenalunarox In reply to ratravarman [2011-07-21 01:39:50 +0000 UTC]

Well, I kinda figured that since the map to the cemetery lists the people & the careers they had. They have alot of people from musicians writers, dancers, actors etc...
