Plush FAQs: [link]

Fixed its neck, since I was getting sick of the overly long neck. It didn't seem overly long until a couple weeks afterwards.

Updates to come, but I probably wont take pictures of since they're not major, I'm going to add a bit of fabric to the legs to make them sturdier, and then restuffing the wings.

Still majorly huggable, just not over 5ft

The zorua plush is there for size comparison, and because i've been holding it most of today. It's about 5 inches, it was the BW tour across america one.

Quick question, what material did you use for this plush? I'm trying to gain more experience in sewing and have yet to try materials like minky and velvet. Any tips you have for making a plush like this and of that size?

The best I can recommend is fleece, particularly anti-pill. You can buy it in large amounts for fairly cheap ($6-8/yard is what I'm used to, and almost always comes in 60" wide bolts and nearly every color I need), and its soft and durable (and the antipill means it'll hold up longer from wear and tear).Β

I'm also working on making a giant Lugia plush, and I was just looking for a bit of help/thoughts/commentary/whatever you wanna call it-- For the wings, I'm assuming you used the same stuffing as you did for the rest of the plush, hence they're slightly rounder shapes. I haven't really decided if I want mine to have the same puffiness to them, I guess you could call it. Do you think using the kind of batting used for quilting/in comforters could achieve a more even, flatter effect that doesn't seem to bunch up like regular stuffing in a flat shape? Logic says it should, but I'm always open for others' opinions.

Sareii In reply to toolbiscuit [2014-11-30 20:08:37 +0000 UTC]

I did use regular filling for the wings yes. At the time, I figured it would work well enough without having to pay for a whole roll of quilt batting (as they are fairly large and you only need a small portion). To this day, I'm unsure if it's better or worse, I'm pretty sure each effect it gives is nice in its own way.
-Quilt batting will be pretty even, you wont get filling lumps and will in general look a lot more quality. You are paying for the whole roll, which has more limited uses than regular stuffing, as its not nearly as plush or soft as polyfill. BUT I am tempted to give it a try.
-Polyfill will be cheaper, since you're already buying some to fill the rest of the plush. It will bunch up the more it's used, there may be a chance it'll separate entirely into smaller lumps. When I used it, the wings felt a little heavy, I wonder if using the quilt batting would have made them lighter since it was so even, but I liked how huggable the filling made them.

It'll all come down to personal choice. You'll probably want to layer the quilt batting a couple times to make sure the wings have form.

I've been looking around and there's a few brands of batting that sell smaller cuts (the favorite dimensions seem to run 34" x 45"), and a couple online stores sell by the yard like regular fabric (though I wouldn't have the benefit of feeling the batting for myself, but I would be able to get a smaller amount for my needs).
Even if I settle with a whole roll, I figure I'll need at least three layers of batting per wing to give it enough substance, and mine is going to be about as big as yours (give or take, I'm still drafting out my pattern and waiting for the rest of my fabric to come in so I can't really be sure until then). Considering the size of the wing (times 6, for all the layers of batting), I figure I'll use a good amount of batting, and if anything I'll have some left over in case I need it in the future.
I know I don't have enough polyfill right now, so once I get my Christmas money (and surely a Michael's gift card) I can decide whether I want to splurge on the extra material or not. So I mean, I've got some time to make up my mind too. Thanks for the tips!

I know you say that you make your patterns as you go, but do you have any tips for how to start out on such a huge endeavor like this? I'd really like to create one myself, but I am unsure where to start. Should I try making a paper model first?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sareii In reply to paixiao [2014-03-13 07:35:50 +0000 UTC]

What you should do is sketch what you want the finished plush to look like. it helps you get an idea of hey, I need a seam here. Or, hey, I need to make this a separate piece.Β

From there, get ready to play a lot around with patterns. I didn't start testing patterns until recently, when I started making plushes that would be made several times over. But unless you've had some sewing experience, you do need to do some trial and error with patterns. Draw them out, how you think they'll work, on cheap paper. To save on materials, scale them down (so if I were testing a giant lugia, I would scale them down as if I were making a 10 inch lugia, much easier to test) and transfer the patterns to cheap fabric. I sometimes dont have the fabric for testing (cheap broadcloth cotton runs like 2 bucks a yard at fabric stores), so I actually use paper towels.

Once you've managed to get your patterns to work, there you go! Scale them up and get started on the final plush. I would like to mention, I think larger plushes are /far/ easier to make. More room to edit seams if they dont quite fit right.

paixiao In reply to Sareii [2014-03-13 07:43:53 +0000 UTC]

Alright, thanks so much! Usually, I reference a photo, but I see how drawing it out would be much better.Β
I should probably look into broadcloth, I can see the people I live with not being too happy with me using all the paper towels in the house.
I agree with larger plushies being easier, but they take so long since I handstitch everything. I'm just asking for carpal tunnel. LOL

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sareii In reply to paixiao [2014-03-13 07:54:27 +0000 UTC]

Oh man yeah, handstitching a large plush will be grueling. Have some youtube videos queued up for that. And yeah, if you don't have a fabric store in town or nearby, look at getting a really cheap bedsheet. It sounds wasteful, but you can use that fabric for other things too, besides plush-testing.Β

Reference photos help! But if you have a specific idea for your plush, or dont have an idea at all and want to brainstorm, sketching them is great. Go grab reference photos when you're done thinking of a final look.

You posted on this image earlier this week and I responded. You just dug up a comment I made almost a year ago.

This plush is SOLD, I sold it in June for $625 and it got shipped off to the east coast. I'm sorry, none of my plushes are available for sale nor haggle. I appreciate your interest, but it is well past my ownership these days.

And why does that matter? Why do you keep pressuring your price amount into each of your comments on a plush that already sold? I agree I think the price it sold for was high, which I set it for bid-style because I was moving across country and needed the money, but you sitting here saying "nah 200 would have been worth it" ON the piece itself is rather rude.

I don't see why you're so adverse to selling the patterns or plushes you make... you have an extreme talent for them and I'm sure people would pay out their asses to have either of those. But it is your choice after all. Just curious I suppose.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sareii In reply to LitPixel [2013-02-01 21:08:27 +0000 UTC]

I'm well aware that people would want them, but for one thing, I don't even have the patterns to begin with. I change them while I work so I don't really ever have one. Plus, I don't want people buying something that really only makes sense to me...It's a lot of things I don't feel like explaining myself over.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LitPixel In reply to Sareii [2013-02-01 21:11:12 +0000 UTC]

I see. Well I'm sorry you feel that way. Perhaps you should put this in you dA ID? That'd be a great way for people to see it and stop asking.. or you can stop allowing comments on your photos of the plushes.

Sareii In reply to LitPixel [2013-02-02 02:16:48 +0000 UTC]

I don't want to simply stop comments, because people actually have questions i can answer. I have links in each plush and comments saying not to ask about them, but that's about all I can do. It hasn't been nearly as bad as it used to be
