Description Graphite on paper

Slime molds are fascinating ... cooperative single-celled organisms that come together to move through the forest in search of food (rotting wood) and communicate to form fruiting bodies that distribute spores ... weird and wonderful ... not plant fungus or animal ...

you know, even though I haven't seen this work for years it has been on my mind lately. Elementally it's that beautiful gradient you have in the background and the exciting textures (particularly in the left side of the image) coupled with the interesting context that you gave in your description. I apologise if this comment reads a little awkwardly-- I want to tell you that your drawing has worked its way into my memory.

I love the soft glow that this work has. It's really wonderful how you achieved that.

I was have seen some recent documentaries about slime moulds and also how slime moulds may evolve in millions of years. Supposedly they will become much more mobile and be able to imitate certain shapes. For example they form a shape of a fruit and some large creature eats the fruit, expelling it somewhere else. Thus the slime is able to travel greater distances.

Perhaps in the distant future they will even imitate humans to confuse predators or more plausibly to attract prey! Most people would be curious enough methinks.

Beautiful work.

SalHunter In reply to utarefson670 [2006-10-03 11:18:09 +0000 UTC]

Thank you

I find them fascinating ... they've recently been used meshed with a robot control program [link] ... OK the robot went in search of a dark place ... but it does get you thinking of biomechanoids in the not so distant future ... ... and all the science fiction that could come true ... and the possible consequences ...

Given a few million years perhaps their communication systems could evolve and allow super-associations with huge distributed processing capabilities ... ahhh the possibilities seem endless

utarefson670 In reply to SalHunter [2006-10-03 13:52:24 +0000 UTC]

That's a very interesting link. Its quite incredible actually. Imagine a slime mould controlled and fly-powered vehicle/robot? lol? Perhaps not as far fetched as we think?
