Of course, no matter how talented a photographer is, he or she still needs to find a subject worth photographing, and this one is definitely a good pick. The framing is enough that it fills the frame and makes the most of an interesting keep, and while it is relatively simplistic in that it doesn't employ too much along the lines of angles, rule of thirds, etc, the lack of textbook technique doesn't really bother me much here. What does make it is the decisions the artist made after the picutre was taken. Typically, it would make sense to go with black and white in a shot like this, but I really like how the greens are faded just enough so that they are no longer a distraction in the least, yet they still exist there as colors. It's a great effect.
The clouds are also brought out to their fullest, and really add to the mood I think the photographer is attempting to set.
There's just the slightest bit of halo around the castle from dodging/burning, HDR, or whatever post-processing technique was used in order to bring those clouds out so much, but honestly, I actually had to go out of my way to look for it, so it doesn't make enough of an impact to alter the authentic feel of the piece.
All in all, a very powerful piece that evokes precisely the feelings that it was undoubtedly intended to. I feel like there's a great song that could go along with it.
