Description When Dorothy's house was carried to Oz by the tornado, she landed on, and destroyed the WWE, no not the Wrestling company, the Wicked witch of the East, who had kept the Munchkins in bondage and cursed the Tin Woodsman.

Now, I bet you are wondering a few things if you have not read the original Oz books.

1. Why are the shoes silver?

Because the shoes are silver, not ruby in the book.
Besides, in the Munchkin country, sapphires are the most common stone, not red rubies.
The shoes were originally silver in the mgm musical, but they changed them to ruby so that they would show up against the YBR, and to better show off technicolor.

2. Why is Dot blonde?

In the books, the illustrators chose to portray Dorothy as blonde, despite some false colorizations, even Denslow showed her to be blonde, as did Neill and the other artists.
In the movie, she was going to be blonde too, but they decided Judy looked fake in a wig.

3. Why isn't her dress blue gingham?

Dorothy changed clothes after recievibg the shoes. Before that she is shown wearing a reddish colored dress, but I think it might have been pink.

4. Why is the grass aquaish?
In the Munchkin Country, everything has a blueish tint, and is not all super colorful and full of little people like the movie shows. The munchkins that Dorothy first met were short, but the typical munchkins, like Ojo, His Uncle and Aru, were normal heights.

You know, if you hadn't pointed it out in the description, I wouldn't have known that the grass was supposed to be blue. But, like you said, it makes sense because she's in the Munchkin Country.Β

Ugh, my early days of trying digital coloring. This was so bad!

Blonde Dorothy dominates. And no offence to Judy Garland but in theΒ book series Dorothy is around 6 not 16. AnywayΒ I like the silver slippers way better. And her pinkish red dress is betterΒ to some blue and white gingham dress.

I agree. I know most people like to think of Dot as a brunette, but originally, Judy Garland was supposed to wear a blonde wig, but the director said it didn't look natural.
In Denslow's illustrations her hair is light brown, almost blonde in several and of course in every canon book since she was blonde.
I've always thought of Dorothy as between 6-9 on her first visit. Some say 5, but I think that's too young. I believe the Oz stories happened really close together. I'm pretty sure Ozma of Oz took place no more than two or three years after The Wizard of Oz, regardless of when it wasΒ  published. And I think the next three times Dorothy travelled to Oz were really close together.
(There's even hints that she travels to Oz more times than Baum writes, since she can contact Ozma any time and visit.)
As for the Silver Shoes, I agree. Ruby Slippers might have made more sense for technicolor, but they are too gaudy and not as interesting imo.
And the dress is pinkish red because when she arrives in Oz she'd not wearing gingham, she changes into that dress later when she sets off to see the Wizard. I chose a faded color since I imagined it would contrast better to her blue one.
She also wore other dresses while in oz, like the white one she gets in Emerald City.

Thanks for the comment, always fun to hear from Oz fans.

I like how you combined the original appearance of Denslow, but made her slender like from Neill's illos.

Yeah, I didn't really like the Denslow version, but I love Neill's, so I mixed it a little.
Thanks.

They are really good, you can order them from Books of Wonder.
Have you read Ojo in Oz? It tells about Ojo's history and how he came to live in the Munchkin woods.

www.amazon.com/Ojo-Oz-Wonderfu…
You can get it on Amazon...it's the cheapest place to find it excepting Ebay or getting lucky at a used book store... Unless you torrent it of course. It's kind of up in the air if it's actually public domain. Baum family Trust says it is.

I could copy-paste that for the description of any Dorothy picture I've ever drawn.

Dorothy is just amazing.
I still probably prefer Betsy though.

Betsy is super-cool, but of the non-fairy girls, I just love Trot. Totally fell in love with her in Scarecrow of Oz.

Polychrome is awesome.....she actually runs around in see through garment though.
She's especially revealing in the Tin Woodsman of Oz.
I wonder what Maud thought about that?
