Feral-Cats In reply to ClockworkAardvark [2013-10-25 17:35:53 +0000 UTC]
Feral cats are born wild. Otherwise, they would be stray cats. Anyway, they cannot be domesticated, but they can be tamed. It's process similar to the taming of wild horses; You can either break them by catching them with a trap, put them in a room and try to interact with them and force them to stay with you, or you can gain their trust by just leaving them outside and feeding them, then playing with them and just being nice to them until they make up their mind and follow you into your house. For my standards, I only use the first method with kittens up to three months, everything above shall be tamed by trust. I tamed four feral cats so far, and one is still in training [following me into the house already, though]. And I also caught a couple of young cats with a trap [I usually do it with my bare hands with young cats] who were tamed by 'breaking' them. The cats do not seem to react different on any method as long you only use the 'breaking-thing' with young kittens.
So they can be tame, but not sure domesticated. They will need their space, their time to be alone and they will go hunting very often, no matter how many food you give them. They just happen to like being with you and get some cuddles and food as a reward for hunting.
