I had upvoted but not commented.
I think that in digital version this would be even more beautiful!

OK, you've inspired me to do my comic and practice landscapes!
The drama is great, I suspect a bit symbolic too.

what helped me a lot was saving a load of images of landscapes that i enjoyed for various reasons. Mostly what makes the image look close to reality is the range of colors. and no matter how hard we try it's pretty useless time wise to "guess" the right blue color of some sky when we can just color pick i thought at first that using colors from images might be a bit of a short way but after all , we are using the colors of nature. would be a shame to not do it. (sure, most images i get are not very altered in Adobe programs)

so it gets easier for example to draw a landscape at sunset just cause you already have 234543659 pictures of sunsets over water/mountains/cities/etc , your time will instantly be shortened and energy can be put in other details
Rules? photography ones. mostly. Sometimes i am shocked to see that a photograph can look amazing while having very little information but doesn't apply in illustration. I figured that the eye needs to wonder from place to place and we need to guide it with different tricks(birds, branches, things pointing at X place )

Ehm.. that's mostly all my insight on this .. if needed i can recommend some sweet youtube channels related to it

I get your point, reference is definitely good. Color picking can be good too but it might take the artist's interpretation out of the picture a bit. Depends on how you use it too, it's a good tool to help train your eye for realism. But if you don't learn from it, it's just a good tool for being. Then again, "lazy" is OK, artists can create however they want ;]
(I'm slowly catching up on some messages, by the way.)

it's more than ok... i lately have a lot of time and i know it's harder for people that actually do something to answer to everything i write haha

I usually color pick 1 color and then use color.adobe.com/create/color-w… for complementary colors and shades. In time the eye does get trained but it's a bit hard .. i mean... if i have a black/white background for example it's harder to guess the correct color .. Especially that i used to look at portraits and see how big the difference is between lit places and the ones in shade.. for me when there's too many colors is way harder to get the proper one...it gets influenced by the ones around it mostly..

Now you made me wanna go digital again haha

Someone mentioned that color wheel a long time ago, I book marked it this time.
I saved some colors, just need to figure out how to open it in Photoshop :]

There are all sorts of art rules that I usually forget. I wish I had a better memory.
