The distortion is due to the refraction settings on the 'reflections and transparency tab in the postprocess. Always a gamble (for me!) how it will turn out so I tend to stay away from changing it from the standard settings. Maybe I should have a closer look

It's transparency on the sphere, so blue is a bit like soap-bubble effect from a light

Aww, that is so horrible, isn't it? That something is quite easy and available and that you just never knew... I had the same with anti-aliassing in MB3D... took me more than a year to find MB3D had possibilities for it built-in arrgghh!
And the transparencies: took me a long time to find out how they really work, so you are much quicker than I ! I have written a tutorial about the transparency, if you like to read Q-n-D Mandelbulb3D Reflections and Transparency

i felt like an idiot and i am still not able to get this exceptionally glassy quality.
i know tutorials (the one about inner glow too) - both are very good and instructive - but my stupidity was stronger

I'll tell you a little secret: Until I heard it mention here on DA I never new what anti-aliassing was! I had to google it :} And then I spent ages finding it in mb3d!!!
The glassy quality: can't get it like that very often either! ;}  Also seems to depend on light-settings somehow... I am not sure, can't find anything about it.

do you mean 1 size setting in mb? i did 1:4 and waited for every render much longer than needed
btw, even set to 1:1 often seems to be ok for bigger prints (9600x5400), much more problems with strange strips/bandings, esp. when using more "foggy" bg. - probably needs some post-process.
