did you ever think that maybe...there are different types of lips? not all lips look the same and it's better to learn how to be different. Considering all you do is make stamps you shouldn't really be complaining about it

i do more than make stamps and who the opinion comes from is irrelevant. You should be teaching the standard shape so people can exaggerate from there not on exaggeration. Considering you have no idea how to draw may it be something has simple as an ear, maybe you arent entitled to speak.

Frappetau In reply to NameLeems [2015-09-30 00:49:02 +0000 UTC]

excuse me but I don't think I was talking to you sir, so please mind your own business. Coming from someone who can't even finish one simple drawing you should really look at yourself before critiquing someone else's work.

I don't get why everyone is so in love with this guy's tutorials ... all he's good at is drawing eyes (and relatively good at faces) but that's really all there is to it ... I also think that he'll delete this one soon because it will get these type of comments. He can hardly deal with critique, too :c

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PKKiss In reply to WindSwirl [2015-09-29 08:49:39 +0000 UTC]

Different strokes for different folks. This exists for people who want to either find a way to do lips or get extra tips. Also just a hint, you two are the only salty ones here. Just because you don't have a need for it doesn't mean you need to shit on it. You're also shitting on people who have these kinds of lips.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WindSwirl In reply to PKKiss [2015-09-29 12:57:13 +0000 UTC]

I didn't mean to offend anyone here - there's a difference between critique and 'salt'. Look the thing is ryky is very popular and his step by step things are supposed to help people draw certain things, right? What he does though is not teaching how to draw lips but show how he would draw lips (and how to make things look shiny).
What I'd say is problematic about that is that it does not say this anywhere and that people might think that this is how you actually draw lips and that is not the case. If you want to teach someone how to do it you start by explaining anatomy of mouth and maybe techniques to find the right color ... you explain that usually the upper lip is darker than the lower one because light mostly comes from above and so on.
I am aware that ryky is not a good English speaker and that he is still learning. He's also a very kind person. But like I said his stuff doesn't help anyone improve their individual style but only teaches how to draw in his. And that is why I don't get why everyone is so hyped about his tutorials because I cannot belive that so many people want to draw like ryky, instead of their own indiviual style.

Here are some examples of lip tutorials that would actually help you:
How to Draw Male Lips and Paint Skin Tones <- highly recommented, sycra is a god.
Lip Tutorial Resource

AND I never said that I don't like this kind of lips or anything. Of course there are different types of lips and who am I to judge what is beautiful or not?

PKKiss In reply to WindSwirl [2015-09-30 02:56:26 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for responding and taking the time to write this. I agree that this is showing how to do things in his individual style. I can't speak for others but I look at his stuff to find little tips I can add to my own style since I'm not the best at shading lips aha. Speaking of which, thank you for the link! I haven't actually seen them before but I'm loving what I'm seeing. Also the not liking these kinds of lips or saying they aren't natural thing was more directed at the OP than you, so I'm sorry if you took offense to that.

Oh, sure, no problem, I'm glad you agree!
Sycra 's tutorials on youtube are very helpful in general, they helped me personally very much, especcially with anatomy.

Have a good day!

Polardarkness In reply to WindSwirl [2015-09-29 13:42:59 +0000 UTC]

Well, they are supposed to help you, but not to teach you, and this is mentioned in the very title. This is not a tutorial, it's a step-by-step (which just means showing the process).
Also, I'd like to know how do you know that it doesn't help absolutely anyone. Because, well, you know, I'm standing right here and it DOES help me. Seeing other artist's processes helps me and makes me reflect on rendering and how I do things. Just as when I am trying to search info about something, I don't take everything literally, I see different sources of information and reflect on that to get the best info out of all I've seen. I believe that's how it works and I don't believe that Ryky should mention this, because knowing that you should have your OWN opinions is a very basic thing :/

ps: I believe that the best way to teach lips would be going to the basics (anatomy, rendering...) rather than explaining "this is darker than that"

psps: I'd be more concerned about the existence of books and tutorials with tons and tons of bad info than about the absence of it here.

step by steps are a form of tutorial bud.

Polardarkness In reply to NameLeems [2015-09-29 21:25:06 +0000 UTC]

I was using the word tutorial only as in "an account orΒ explanationΒ of a subject, printed or on a computer screen, intended for private study" (in this step by step there aren't any explanations) but yes, the general concept we usually have of the word tutorial may include step by steps. The arts and crafts tut section is a perfect example.

Um. Have a look around his gallery and at how many of his step-by-step things are titled 'tutorial' ...
To answer your question: I think it only shows how to draw in sparky-spark-ryky-style, that's why I think it will not help you if you're trying to find out how to draw something in general. I argee though that you might take this as an example of a way to do it ... though I'd rather not do it anything like this (my own opinion).

ps: that was only an example

pps: Ryky's page has at least as many views as those books.

ppps: I still recommend looking at Sycra 's tutorials, they were really helpful to me (also my opinion).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Polardarkness In reply to WindSwirl [2015-09-29 20:50:45 +0000 UTC]

I was talking about this deviation in particular, rather than about the whole gallery, but you have a point. Although it's not really incorrect to call them tutorials.Β Β
Here, Ryky is drawing/painting a specific thing in a specific style. If you see an art and crafts or a dressmaking tutorial, you'll notice that most of them are about doing a specific dress or craft and not about a general way to do dresses or crafts. A lot of people are okay with it, because they are able to a)adapt the tutorial to suit their own needs, b)take ideas from it (directly or indirectly), c)reinforce what they previously learned.Β
Β It may not give you a general idea? Sure. Can you actually learn something from it? Yes.
Um...I think there is a big gap between "this won't be very useful for people searching for generic tuts and examples (why are you searching on DA of all places OTL) to "this is totally useless for everyone"

pps: oh, so Ryky is on libraries and bookstores all over the world just like Mark Crilley/Christopher Hart/Random "how to draw" book artists are? First time I hear about it. I wish it was like that, Ryky's "tuts" are at least 100x less "dangerous" than those lol.
ppps: I can somewhat agree on that, he's a fairly nice teacher, although I prefer Feng Zhu

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WindSwirl In reply to Polardarkness [2015-10-01 13:30:17 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm ... of course you can learn something from looking at things but that goes for basicly every picture/video/thing you see, no matter what quality it has. You don't need a step by step or tutorial for that. I think ryky's intention was indeed to try and teach you something.

I've never heared of those two but I googled it and it looks weird ... they seem to sell that stuff in Germany, too.
I would still say that ryky's tutorials are quite popular on deviantart and have tenthousands of views.
