Description Something that's always bothered me about some alternate history anthologies are the timelines which are only hinted on, but never fleshed out. I want to know what the rest of those worlds are like! GURPS Infinite Worlds is particularly bad about this, tantalizing us with sentence-long descriptions of an alternate world. Well, I'm setting up a series to flesh out these worlds!

My first entry is also Dixie-1. I chose this because not only is it the first timeline in GURPS: Alternate Earths, but it is also the first map in the first Map Thread  on AH.com. I based this map primarily off Diamond's, but I did take a few ideas that Keperry012  used in his Dixie-1  but Diamond did not, such as an independent Asante. I avoided using OTL borders as much as possible for this, leading to some clashes with the Dixie-1 map available in Alternate Earths. I also broke up German Africa a bit more, because I thought the huge German blob was rather bland. I also interpreted the German-American relationship closer than Keperry012 did.

There's a numbering error in Morocco.

What's the Chinese Confederacy like? What's their main ideology?

I know this is hella old, but the answer is Agrarian Democracy, which basically means only people who own land get to vote.

This is a great map and all, but Dixie-1 was always my least favorite part of that book. But I understand its need, as an RPG setting. If you have Nazi-world and Aztec-world and Rome-world, an American audience both expects and demands Confederate-world. Still; OTL US failed to eat up either Canada or Mexico, but somehow they expect me to believe that if you split the country in two the mutilated remains will manage both? Gimme a break!

I very much look forward to the other maps in this series, though, as they seem more fun!

Depends on how populated Canada was when the US took it, if they took the main population centers they could easily have pressed Britain into handing over the rest.

Interestingly enough the United States did demand Britain surrender Canada to the US for aiding the Confederacy with three naval warships. Perhaps in this time like since the Confederacy won thanks to British aide the US attacked Canada as revenge and Britain's enemies ganged up on the Britain for revenge like they did in the Revolution. I imagine the German and French Empires would have jumped at the chance to weaken one of their competitors. And depending upon how powerful the CSA was when the Mexican Revolution happened they could have taken advantage of it's weakened state to invade Latin America.

Dixie-1 was always an unrealistic one, which I'm hoping to remedy with my take on the other Dixies.

I'm not really familiar with the GURPS: Alternate Earths, but looking on Wikipedia, I get the gist of the scenario. However, some of the terms like "Parade Rest" and "Long Drum Roll" elude me. Are they allusions to a sort of cold war?

RvBOMally In reply to YRPOtaku169 [2016-06-12 05:37:09 +0000 UTC]

Yes. The Parade Rest is their term for detente, and Long Drum Roll their term for Cold War.

I figured. Thank you.
I look forward to more projects like this.

What bloc do the "neutral" powers prefer (i.e the bloc they are closer to)?

India is aligned with the United States, kinda sorta. France hates everybody, but hates Britain less for not being a German ally. The Russians don't like the Indians as much as they used to (when they weren't a competitor for the Middle East), and hate the Germans. Turkestan just wants everyone to chill.

Awesome! Very cool and original interpretations of Bukhara, New Guinea, Zanzibar, and the Don. Yeah, that Africa makes a lot more sense, I just chose slavish fidelity to the books over plausibility. Either way, glad to see you've started this series. The Age of GURPS is at hand!

Thanks! I like your approach of doing more faithful covers, but obviously if I did the same thing, we'd be duplicating our efforts. I'm going to take two major creative strides with future maps: modernizing GURPS timelines to a similar level of development as 20th century OTL (if they haven't already reached that), and removing magic/weird science stuff if it isn't central to the premise (Gernsback, for example, gets a pass).

Keperry012 In reply to RvBOMally [2016-06-11 18:19:01 +0000 UTC]

I'm not doing faithful covers as a philosophical choice, mind you, I'm just not original enough to come up with very many deviations.

Modernized timelines are good!

Yeah, in whatever I'm doing I'm basically trying to ignore all the Infinity/Centrum stuff as much as I can. Fun for an RPG, confusing and scary for an AH mapmaker.

RvBOMally In reply to Keperry012 [2016-06-11 18:47:12 +0000 UTC]

The Infinity/Centrum stuff, and the magic, I'm leaving out so they can be added in at the audience's discretion. Maybe someone wants to use a GURPS setting for a non-GURPS game session? I give that choice to the player.

I think that the Union/Germany bloc has got this. They essentially dominate continental Europe and Africa, pretty even with Asia (and they probably have unofficial India support). Plus, The Confederacy's probably incredibly unstable, and they and the British can't compete with the combined industrial output of the Union and Germany. China's interesting, though, but I think the Republic would be stronger because South China has been more developed ever since the Mongols.

The Confederacy is more powerful than the Union in this timeline, but they are close.

Although I just noticed New Mombas- I mean, New Zanzibar. How soon until they make contact with the Covenant?

Hah, I'm glad you caught that. The Indians will eventually build a space elevator there. Jury's still out on whether the Prophet of Regret will drop in for a visit.

This one was easy, since it's been fleshed out already by GURPS: Alternate Earths. Some GURPS timelines are literally just a sentence, and will need more work.
