Description This one is inspired by an old soc.history.what-if (google groups) scenario (not mine) called "Lest Anarchy Fall". Inspired, I say, since I don't remember much of it and the google groups archives are a horror to search.

It's been a revolutionary century, from anarchist king-exploding to the second US civil war. Germany won an alt-WWI on points thanks to political troubles in France, did well indeed in the Kaiser's eastwards Crusade Against Communism in the late 20s and early 30s, and found to its distress that its delivery systems for nuclear weapons were not as effective as British ones in the 1950s. (Von Braun died in a ditch outside Kazan in this world).

The US had a more powerful Left, a more paranoid Right, and less sensible leadership during its Great Depression-equivalent: the fallout from the eventual crisis was...unpleasant. The independent west coast eventually rejoined with the restoration of working democracy in Washington, but the South and North had too many differences to successfully resolve by negotiation, and the North wasn't up to fighting Civil War II, the Next Generation.

Mao decided to stay inside the Guomindang Big Tent and eventually succeeded in booting Chiang out. In the long run, the Republic would not benefit from his...unique management style, heroic leadership during the Japanese invasion or not.

Britain only lost a few million people in the atomic exhange, and avoided outright revolution, although the "Emergency" lasted over a decade: but holding onto the Empire, of course, was pretty much impossible at that point...
