Description

Looks like Patrick wasn’t the only one excited for the All-Star Game.

This is the second piece of fan art I’ve done that concerns the 2017 National Hockey League All-Star Game in Los Angeles a while ago. The character featured this time around is Cadpig, a character from the TV series spin-off of the Disney movie “101 Dalmatians”, proudly and eagerly displaying an official puck from the 3-on-3 tournament.

You know, with the conclusion of the eventful Super Bowl LI fresh in everyone's mind, maybe I should have done a football instead…

Eh, too late.

Behind the Scenes:

Sketch, scan, trace, scan (again), and edit.

I once (well, by now, I guess more than once) read this article about the evolution of western animation. It was interesting to study the style of 90s-era cartoons and compare them to that of more recent ones – ones that have inspired fan art I’ve done already. Ultimately the individual designs depend on the artist that created them, but 90s-designed characters tend to incorporate more depth, angles, and rougher edges – a contrast from the more rounded, simplistic characters associated with modern, digitally-assisted animation.

(After viewing the differences, I kind of prefer the 90s design the most; I feel that the jagged lines and quirky details give the character more of a captivating personality.)

Seeing the differences, it was an interesting opportunity for me to do fan art of a cartoon character from the 90s – in this case, Cadpig.

In regards to the art itself, I kept the design relatively basic, just Cadpig showing off a puck – no costumes or gimmicks here, especially this is pretty much the first time I’ve sketched the character. But the picture was fairly easy to do – despite the 90s feel, Cadpig had a simple design, and the puck and its logo were easy to sketch as well (although the logo was a bit of a pain to edit on Photoshop). If I had all the time in the world, I’d probably spend more time making the ASG logo on the puck cleaner and clearer, as well as add a pattern of black spots to the background in a way that isn’t distracting. Otherwise, I’m good with the mostly clean, smooth state of the piece.

I’d like to issue a special thanks to YTV for renewing my interest in a movie that I had repeatedly seen back when I was young. A few weeks ago, the channel aired “101 Dalmatians” as part of a long streak of showing classic Disney movies on the weekends. The opportunity to rewatch the movie at my current age – being older and all – allowed me to view a bunch of details I probably wouldn’t have noticed as a kid, and consequently gain a new interest and appreciation for the film. So, I decided to dig up more information about the movie, discovered the TV series, and did some relevant research all around the time of the All-Star Game in LA.

And that’s how this picture of Cadpig and a hockey puck came to be.

That's actually something I've noticed myself, just as someone who appreciates art style and character design and has been watching cartoons since the 90's. And also someone who has studied the animation of some shows frame by frame to see how it was done. I have a noticed a trend of simplification in modern cartoons, and always figured it was because... well, computers made people lazy. I don't necessarily blame them, they're in the business of making money and I assume the simpler designs reduce the animating costs, but it is quite a shame it seems we have lost a certain quality in animation.
Cute Cadpig too.

Nice to see a fellow Canadian!

Well said, and I pretty much agree. It just seems that, in the digital age, the trend towards more simple styles has caused cartoons to lose a lot of character. I'm not necessarily saying that it significantly ruins today's animated shows in general, but their designs just pale in comparison to the quality of some older works. For many reasons, it just doesn't really feel quite right anymore.

Thanks for the insight, and glad you think so about Cadpig!
