The Danan

Though technically human, their peculiar features are enough to make all regard them as a separate people, having long adjusted to life in mountain caves. At one time, their country was immensely rich and powerful due to heavy salt deposits, but several hundred years have passed since those resources ran dry. Presently, though politically weak, Danan’s extensive underground tunnels beneath nearly every country keep its once famous market cities thriving.

The Danan are the most populous people in the world thanks in part to their land’s natural defenses—mountain ranges and sheer coastal cliffs give invaders few opportunities for attack. In addition, their sheer numbers, diversely strong spiritual culture, and openness to other peoples have averted nearly all attempts of outside conquest, as invading peoples simply blend into the existing culture.

The Danan are immediately recognizable by their unusual height and gray skin. Large amounts of silver in their water supply cause the color, though this is unknown to even the Danan themselves. Long torsos and arms (to climb/reach high places), short legs (to stoop under low ceilings), and slim bodies (to fit through small/narrow areas) make them masters of their cave environment. Nocturnal eyes, kept mostly closed above-ground, allow perfect vision in even the darkest places. Their unusual hairline extending down the neck and back protects against water and other substances that drip from cave ceilings.

The Humans

As the most widespread people in the world, they are also the most politically fragmented and physically varied. Living in environments ranging from cold boreal forests (Deru), temperate forests/grasslands (Outer Deru), hot savannahs (Aheyans), and harsh deserts (Sea Wolves), their cultures are likewise vastly diverse, proving to be a constant source of contention amongst them.

After Danan’s fall hundreds of years ago, the humans were in the best position to succeed them, but lack of unity within the most able countries prevented any sort of organized action. These countries, collectively known as Outer Deru, are at constant war with one another. By contrast, the Deru and the Aheyans are mostly peaceful, but were at that time much too small and isolated.

However, with Deru’s militarization of large animals called warlers, they have gained the strength to declare war against Outer Deru in order to unite them under one banner. The first resulting Outer Deru warrior exiles and displaced families resolved to help their countries fight back from a distance, forming the Sea Wolves. Presently, the Sea Wolves and Outer Deru countries work together to resist Deru conquest, while the only neutral human country, Aheya, is caught in the middle.

The Hasho

Though they are the least populous people in the world, their numbers have been slowly increasing thanks to Deru protection against wild warlers, which preyed upon them heavily in the past. The Hasho occupy a very small area of boreal forest and alpine tundra, and although they are bordered by Deru, Outer Deru, and Danan, they are seldom seen except by the Derus, who share a long-running language and culture in common.

The Hasho are at the forefront of astronomy and mathematics, making them expert horologists (calendars) and navigators. Also skilled architects, they and the Deru are presently constructing what is known as The Imperial Road. It is hoped to eventually allow easy communication, transportation, and trade within the unified countries—for now, Deru uses the road in-progress to provide quick transportation for and communication amongst its warriors.

Characteristically short and goat-like in appearance, the Hasho are the smallest-sized people in the world. Their fur is quite thick and fluffy to protect from the cold, though much of it is kept stylishly clipped. Their feet are cloven with gripping inner pads, making them sure-footed on most terrain. In fact, most Hasho communities are located along treacherous cliff-faces that are inaccessible to most any living creature.

The Flying Guys

A peculiar people, as despite their lack of political organization, they are impressively unified. Their unparalleled flying power understandably made them constant targets for subjugation in the past, but their ever-changing (at times completely absent) centers of community make such endeavors impossible. They are sighted most anywhere, but cannot tolerate severe environments as successfully as humans.

Like the Hasho, the Flying guys share a common language and culture with the Derus, but not political motivation. In fact, they seem to lack understanding of country relations in general and fail to recognize the sentiments or intentions of other peoples; as such, they can be easily convinced to do most anything for anyone, as long as gullibility can be sustained. Despite this, they are grouped in the Deru-Hasho alliance by all countries because of their deep connection with them.

Flying guys are the largest-sized people in the world, but are more famous for the contrast between their graceful form and clumsy nature, thanks to their sheer size, cumbersome wings, and nearly useless arms. Still, they are incredibly strong and capable of flying great distances with little rest.

Out of all of these designs, I specifically like the Danan and the Flying Guys. The Danan look so awkward, yet endearing and I really like the contrast between the Flying Guys's big, beautiful wings and its small head attached to its winding neck! The descriptions of the different species are truly intriguing! I'm looking forward to seeing more!

You'll probably have no idea how relieved I am to hear that someone likes the Danan. Their design progression has literally been the bane of our existence, as we struggled to come up with something that was on the tall/slender side with gray skin without looking "night-elf-ish" (we avoided white hair like the plague lolol). So just... you liking them really helps ease the months of getting absolutely nowhere.

It's also awesome you found the Danan to look endearing despite their awkwardness, because that's really what I wanted. Awkward enough to be strange, but not so awkward that they're unappealing. Glad you like the Flying Guys too! They're not the brightest in the world.

Woah, did you actually read all the descriptions?? Haha, I was wondering if anyone would even bother to, despite all the time I took to make them sound good Glad it was interesting for you! Thanks so much for the feedback, it's really awesome.

Yep. I read all of them! The descriptions really set the tone of the environment they live in and the current state of the world around them. I also like the brief bits on each species's anatomy and how it adapts to their environment. Usually I have a hard time following stuff like this, but I think you kept it short enough to where I can get it and not be completely confused. And since you and Spatty are planning on making this into a comic, it will probably be that much easier for people to understand what's going on with a visual representation at hand!

Augh, late reply...
I'm really glad to hear that though! That's exactly what I wanted, to present the world in an interesting but NOT confusing way, cuz that's very easy to do when you're world building.

Do you want name suggestions for the 'Flying guys'? Cause I have a couple ideas...

Ohohoh, that is a tempting offer, but I'm afraid I'd feel too guilty using a name not my own creation for something so important

...is vivaryn a sort of cream for doughnuts? Or I'm thinking vivarian, or something... I dunno, I heard it in Weird Al song

Yeah, I think we wanna go for something sorta graceful-sounding
