Whether it looks exactly like me or not, it's an incredible piece, you just have a tendency to make my nose smaller than it is. Those designs echoing my hair look so cool. I can never get over how awesome you color, and just your works overall.

My mind can not contain this question any longer! What medium do you use?

rodluff In reply to LossingFeathers [2013-03-09 00:47:25 +0000 UTC]

a bunch. I'm just experimenting. Started with drawing, then acrylic wash, then 3 coats of GAC 100 and painted over in oil and pastel glazes. THe most important thing is just to focus on the proportion/structure and tonal values. Here's process pics: www.rodluff.tumblr.com

That is super awesome. I have been looking over your tumblr for a week or so now. I really love your work. It's great to read a little bit about it. Keep it up! And I am going to look into some of those mediums. I have never heard of GAC before...

Girlfriends make for a stressful creative experience, don't they? It's difficult to depict her as you see her...

rodluff In reply to phiq [2013-03-09 00:49:33 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure about that, I find most portraits to be incredibly difficult. The challenge was there before she was my girlfriend, mainly because I just find the particular shapes and proportions of her face difficult to draw and get right, particularly the nose and mouth area. A tiny shift here and there will wreck the likeness.

Each face is different, sure, and some are easier to tackle than others. But no one wants to wreck their girlfriend's face. You don't have the same relationship with any other sitter, so there's that extra layer of pressure, or expectation (self-imposed or otherwise). In my experience, I find, at least. There's likeness, but there's depicting personality too. Compare the portraits of the French academics to what the Russians were doing at the same time... the Russian stuff is alive, not simply correct. Reminds me of this >> [link]

oh man i meant to reply to this sooner! I can see where you're coming from, and yes there is definitely a lot more riding on that portrait, I shouldn't deny that, but at the same time I try to cut through that with the method. It helps demystify things and keep it on a level that is more manageable because it's common throughout all portraits. There is a lot of amazing realism done by the Russians of that era and it's some of my favourites. I'm also a huge fan of the French art of the same period. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
