Everything is shot on a dslr, usually green screen.

Nice. But the Enterprise A was in no shape to help anyone after the battle with Chang's Bird-Of-Prey. Besides she was ordered back to Spacedock for decommissioning. Another thing, Praxis exploded weeks earlier, before the Khitomer battle.

Did I say the Enterprise!!???Β
I meant, uh, you know.. Jeez, you got me.
Okay, but the moon would take a while to completely evacuate, and stabilize.
As far as the Enterprise being in bad shape, she DID fly away under her own power at the end of the movie, and who knows where the second star on the right really was? So, what shape would she have to be in to lend assistance? I figure it could still be marginal.
This would also be a diplomatic show as well, perhaps even more than any actual logistical support.
Thanks
Robert.

She had a serious hull breach, systemic damage, numerous scars from the torpedo hits, compromised shields, and who knows what else (not to mention being 45 some-odd years old at the time). Also, The Excelsior was there, and she would've been more capable of rendering aid to Praxis.

The 1701-A was not 45 years old. More like 10. She was introduced at the end of "Voyage Home".

No. The Enterprise A was formerly the Yorktown (One of the original Constitution class ships (refitted) left in service). She was renamed Enterprise in ST:IV TVH. So she was some 45 years old at the time.

The Yorktown was never mentioned on film. Going by what was on film, that ship was the 1701-A from the get-go. It's not mentioned in the novel adaption either- I just checked. So the Yorktown is non-canon and only counts if you want it to.

Hunter2045 In reply to mdbruffy [2014-12-29 03:55:07 +0000 UTC]
Actually, you're wrong. The Yorktown is mentioned in the film. Communications with the ship's captain indicated that she had encountered the probe and lost power. They (the ship's crew) were going to try to deploy a makeshift solar sail to try to generate power. I suggest that you re-watch the film. It's official Star Trek canon that the Yorktown became the Enterprise A; even if it not mentioned in the film, or novelization.

mdbruffy In reply to Hunter2045 [2014-12-29 04:04:44 +0000 UTC]
Just because they hear her signal saying she's going to rig a solar sail doesn't mean she sailed all the way back to Earth instead of the nearest starbase and they decided to rename her. If the actualΒ order to rename her isn't on film, then it's not canon. What character gives the order to rename her? At what point in the film is the order heard or mentioned? Novels, comics, tech manuals none of that outside materal is canon unless it appears on film.
additional:
Just checked the only outside source I have that refers to the naming of the 1701-A. In "Mr.Scott's Guide to the Enterprise", on page 112,it says:
"The USS Ti-Ho was chosen as the host vessel for the new drive design. Ti-Ho was not a Constitution refit, but was built new from the keel up... "
Β Page 114:.. Starfleet elected to return Kirk to the position of Starship Commander, and he was given a new ship: Ti-Ho was re-christened "Enterprise" and her hull registry was changed to NCC-1701-A.."
Β Again, like the Yorktown story, none of this was ever committed to film.Β So you can accept either one.

It was Roddenberry's idea, and absolutely nothing contradicts it. It also makes far more sense that a 40+ year old ship would be decommissioned versus a damaged 10 year old one.Β

Another awesome shot.
The ports look a little too bright, is that on purpose?
Composition leads the eye across the image just right.
Good stuff man

I'll try toning them down, and see what they look like!

I thought maybe that was the intention.
I built a vacuform model of the ExcelsiorΒ
years ago, the most difficult modelling project
I ever attempted. You've probably heard about
the kit, the one in scale with the AMT Enterprise,
It took eight months to finish it, this was before I
knew anything about LED's, I lined the saucer with foil
but it was just too much heat build up. While I was trying
to get a picture, the hull melted above every set of windows
that I had spent all those hours with the pin vice to get just right.
The whole time I was thinking those windows look a little too bright.
Then I noticed the craters. Your image brought back all those wonderful
memories. Β (shudder) (gack) But I'm feeling much better now!

I'm grimacing as I read this.Β
I haven't melted anything yet, but I have burned out led's.Β
After sealing up the beast.
My only self learned lesson, is to use the highest rated resistor on the led's that I can, and that way they will last, and of course, not burn up the ship!
Btw.
Have you any advice on lighting kits for the Enterprise TOS 1/350th kit? I know Round 2 makes one, but I keep hearing there are better ones. Just haven't found one.
Thanks
Robert.

I guess i'm dating myself here, but the last time I built
a star trek model there was no such thing as a lighting kit.
You went to radio shack and bought grain of wheat bulbs,
at least thats all I ever knew how to do.
I did a quick search and it seems like there is no shortage of
lighting kits for anything you could name but MAN! the prices!
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to vicariously enjoying your build.

Thanks man!
I didn't expect you to go shopping for me. I just figured you might know something.Β
I have been doing the same, and yah! The prices! Yoikes!
I saw one nice one for $165. More than the model.
Not to mention the paint mask kit, around $50.
I have been rooting around in the model, and it's nice. The 1/350th Refit. It is going to be quite a ride.
