Description
I just finished watching another great series, Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X) that tells of a wandering ex-man slayer known as the Battosai who has taken an oath to never slay again and instead has taken it upon himself to protect people with his unique Reverse Blade sword. It’s quite interesting in its own ways as it takes place in the Meiji Period of Japan (11 years into the Meiji Era in the story line) This period represents the first half of the Empire of Japan during which Japanese society moved from being an isolated feudal society to its modern form. Fundamental changes affected its social structure, internal politics, economy, military, and foreign relations.
But the struggles of the new forming government, some points had me confused which goes to show how little I know of politics or its history but that didn’t stop me from looking up pieces of it on the web after watching an episode. But just from watching the show it seemed to me that as the people of Japan struggled to adjust to these new changes coming to their country as well as their new government Kenshin also has to struggle with his past at what he has done and find some sort of redemption for his past sins which he does by defending the people of Japan during these time of changes from those who don’t seem to be able to let go of the changes and wanted Japan to remain in a feudal type of society or to create their own type of government under their own vision and beliefs.
Rurouni Kenshin is an interesting show as just like InuYasha in some ways it shows the viewers the changes that come to Japan and how western modernization began to slowly work its influence into Asian culture too. But also from this show it seems that even with all the changes that has come to Japan since the Meiji Era Japan still stays strong and loyal to it traditional roots that still continues on to this day and that is what makes it so unique.
That it does
I acknowledge that I don’t own Ruriouni Kenshin or the screenshots, they belong to Nobuhiro Watsuki
