Description Here's my entry for BeyondRen 's "Draw Your Own OC" contest.  I'm afraid my skills are not good for drawing, and truthfully I'm embarrassed to even show my reference picture.  Even though I didn't want Dr. Zarander to look exactly like my reference.  Still, I am glad for BeyondRen encouraging me to try one of my Star Wars supporting characters.

So, I give you the perpetually uneasy Dr. Rylkir Zarander, a doctor in the First Order stationed on the Star Destroyer Finalizer, who's had a real handful foisted upon him in Another Set of Eyes.  He's really not that bad of a guy despite who he works for.

------------

Dr. Rylkir Zarander, Commander, FOSN.
Head of Urgent Care, Star Destroyer
Finalizer

Age: 69
Homeworld: Halcyon

Born three years before the Siege of Naboo, Rylkir Zarander has no memory of a galaxy that wasn't either teetering on the brink of war and anarchy, or actually caught in the throes of it--including severe political unrest on his own world that lasted until the rise of the Empire.  By the time Zarander was 16, the Galactic Empire ruled, and at age 26, as he was graduating from medical school, the Imperial Navy conscripted him for service in the Imperial Medical Corps, where he served until the fall of the Empire.  Zarander experienced a brief stint in the civilian world then, but finding no place for someone like him in the idealistic New Republic, and disgusted with the piracy and slavery that the New Republic never seemed to be able to bring under control, Zarander traveled to the Unknown Regions to serve once more with the people he knew.

During that time, the Imperial remnant morphed from the familiar structure he knew into the First Order, under the rule of Supreme Leader Snoke and a new generation of commanders including General Brendol Armitage Hux II and Commander Kylo Ren.  Now, thanks to extraordinary happenings behind the scenes that he can't even begin to guess at, Dr. Zarander has been forced to tolerate a strange medic with incomplete training and hints of instability, who has fallen in with Kylo Ren.  Not only does he have to put up with this odd quasi-Knight of Ren for Force only knows what reason, he is now caught near the epicenter of a new faultline in the ongoing battle for dominance between his own boss's boss, General Hux, and the Master of the Knights of Ren...and whoever else might choose to weigh in at any point.

Hey...thank you so much for your kind words!  I am still nowhere near to the level I'd need to be to actually be a decent artist, but I still appreciate it.

Aww, thanks.  While I didn't feel I needed an *exact* likeness, I am pleasantly surprised that you identified the reference I used.  I feel a little better now!

Thanks, glad you liked it. This took a LOT of failed attempts to get to and there's still no way I'd be able to work without sticking close to a reference.

That's usually how most art starts :3 a lot of hard work and perserverance and a lot of good references :3 This really turned out well and all the hard work showed!

Well...we'll see.  The amount of frustration involved was...Rennish. O_O  But thanks!

So i get notifications from Deviant on my phone when I'm mentioned and stuff, saw this mention pop up, I got so excited trying to open Deviant that I instead flung my phone onto the ground xD

This is so amazing though! Coming from a digital artist who does realism, this is seriously amazing and I'm so glad you did it!!

I'll add this into the contest journal once I'm on my computer ^-^

You know the funny thing?  I have NO conception of how to do any form of digital art--as in, even LESS than I have with traditional.

Hope your screen is OK!

Not going to lie when I say digital is very difficult to grasp when you first start out. Probably weird coming from me, but, I prefer the look of traditional work over digital any day.

I've got a tough screen, don't know how many times I've dropped this phone now

I enjoy looking at traditional a lot. The long and short of it, though, is that I just don't have a natural talent for drawing. So much easier to write!

You're funny! From what I'm seeing, you have an amazing talent in art and it doesn't matter if you stuck close to a reference. I can't even use a reference and draw that well in a traditional style, I basically have an entire sketch book filled with failed attempts.
I'm actually a little jealous of your traditional talent!!

RensKnight In reply to Novatity [2016-07-15 01:53:52 +0000 UTC]

Well, let's just say I lack the versatility a good artist would have, to be able to do other styles, set up poses, compose a scene, pretty much...everything.  But thanks anyway!

Haha yeah, that can be pretty full on when it comes to it xD
But, no problem ^-^
