Description With thanks to Hampton's Jedi Outfitters for their excellent work on my costume, and Mark Shafer for the photo.

Cosplayer: Me (RensKnight).

I may be small but I think I may have been one of, if not the most intense Kylo Rens at the con I attended.  I LOVED the chance to become Kylo Ren and to do my best to embody the character.  I will definitely be doing this again, whenever I get the chance!

Thank you so much for noticing my study of Kylo Ren's mannerisms!  I definitely paid a lot of attention to that, and in this case, the photographer was also giving me cues to let me know when it was coming off best to the camera, so he gets a lot of credit for this shot too.

I immerse myself deeply into this character...and I am so glad you feel it shows.  Thanks for your wonderful comment!!

Kylo's actor, Adam Driver, was in the US Marine Corps, I believe
So his posture and the way he grips his hands - it is very militant, very dedicated
And I think as a former soldier myself (Russian Naval Infantry, Russian Ground Forces) I noticed it more than most people did
And I dunno, I think you just nailed it perfectly
And that is hard to do when your face is concealed in a mask, at that

Playing the character is important, great job
And of course!
Any chance we will see more of this costume in the future?

I have tremendous respect for Adam Driver's willingness to serve.  I know he was injured and unable to deploy, but he continues to care deeply about taking care of veterans.  And as someone who was raised in a military family, I am very appreciative.

In my case I also noticed some of my own mannerisms mirrored in Kylo Ren.  For one, I have a very unladylike, fast walk, that can look and sound like a phalanx of Stormtroopers on the move.   My female colleagues can't keep up with me unless I slow WAY down...which is HARD!  (I got that both from my military dad, and from my best friends in high school, a couple of twin boys from Russia, neither of whom slowed down for me and I learned to keep up and not complain! )  Taking that and turning it into Kylo's walk feels very natural to me as a result.

As a matter of fact, I am going to a convention next weekend, from 9 to 11 March!!  I can't say whether I will get good pics or not, but I definitely will be wearing the costume at least once.  Maybe even twice, if they decide to put us in the FREEZING ROOM FROM HELL for Sunday panels...

I noticed that he often visits veterans and gives back to his community
I appreciate that integrity and commitment from anyone, regardless of where they are from and who they serve

Haha yes
Walking in Russia is very militaresque
We do not slow down for anyone and walking is never leisurely

Oh wow, that sounds great!
I hope to see some pics from it and generally some stories!
Which convention are you going to exactly?

RensKnight In reply to Gvozdi [2018-03-08 04:44:57 +0000 UTC]

I think it's a great thing.  It's better to humbly serve, I think, than to get up on a soapbox and tell OTHER people what to do (or worse, how they are so much better and more virtuous than the average peon out here who actually has to WORK to pay the bills), the way so many other celebrities do.

LOL, I had not assumed that was some sort of national trait!!   But at least in the north of the country, I would imagine the fact that it's cold outside encourages fast walking...why dawdle when a freezing wind is blowing in your face??

I can't guarantee pics because I would have to get someone to take them for me (plus I only post pics where my mask is on), but I hope I get a few.  The convention is a small local one in my city, definitely not one of the world-famous ones like ComiCon or Celebration.

The fact that he goes out of his way, despite being a likely very busy celebrity and doesn't even advertise his good deeds himself, I think is a really good portrayal of his integrity and character
Just gotta love a guy that wholesome

Walking is not considered a fun or leisurely thing, at least that is how I feel about it from my own raisings
It is a mode of transportation
Driving is considered more of a leisurely thing, in fact

Here's hoping!
Have fun!

He's made it known enough to help bring in the donations his nonprofit needs to keep going, but he doesn't spend unnecessary time in the public eye doing things to draw attention to himself.  Which, again, is so nice to see.

Heh...Russia is a country where I would walk or take public transportation.  The driving there would have me concerned.  Some of the European countries seem like I could manage OK, though.

Gvozdi In reply to RensKnight [2018-03-18 09:02:55 +0000 UTC]

Honestly, such a swell dude...

To be honest, the illusion that Russia's chief export is car crashes is actually due to the fact all cars must have dash cams for insurance reasons.
Ergo, most accidents are recorded and are legally allowed to be uploaded by the owner of said dash cam.
In truth, Russia probably has a similar car crash ratio as most "safe" countries.
It is just that no one is out there recording videos of all the crashes in London or Germany, for example

RensKnight In reply to Gvozdi [2018-03-18 16:16:22 +0000 UTC]

And meteors. If it weren’t for the unfortunate fact that there was significant damage and injuries, I would say the Chelyabinsk meteor was the BEST dash cam footage ever. (Scientists apparently went crazy for it because it was the best documentation humanity has ever had of a meteor fall of that magnitude.)

It’s more the concern that laws would not be appropriately and fairly enforced if something happened that has me concerned, not the fact that accidents happened.

Believe it or not, both the dash cam channels I’m subscribed to are North America only. Nothing like seeing Canadians totally lose their shit on the road to realize that stuff really does happen everywhere.

Gvozdi In reply to RensKnight [2018-03-20 22:21:46 +0000 UTC]

Those are some incredible videos
Especially the ones where people casually just lower their blinds/sunblockers at it haha

Well, that is the thing
People do their best to avoid accidents for the fact dashcams are inherently incriminating
And if they are brought to court and their dashcam footage is reviewed, it will just open a can of worms for them
Russian police may border on fascist but they do go out of their way to ensure that laws are enforced and those who break them are punished
Anyone who goes to or lives in Russia should know that breaking the law is a very, very bad idea because the police only have "sensitivity training" for victims, not perpetrators

Interesting, I was sort of under the impression that many people don't have dash cams outside of eastern europe besides truckers, cops and taxi drivers

RensKnight In reply to Gvozdi [2018-03-21 03:59:08 +0000 UTC]

So bright it looks like an incoming nuke?  No problem, just lower the sun shade and keep going!   And yeah, those are amazing videos all around.

Well, that's good...but still, as a foreigner I would probably still stick with public transit, so that way it is definitely not my responsibility if something goes wrong.

While there are definitely fewer "regular" people with dashcams, I think some people are starting to get the idea here because of the entertainment value in recording the stupidity that happens on the road.  Of course, given the large total population of America and Canada, we manage to scrape together enough material for videos even with a much lower percentage of people having dashcams.  (I am almost tempted to get one because people have NO respect for red lights in my city.  The number of people that run red lights is truly amazing...)

Gvozdi In reply to RensKnight [2018-03-26 04:01:34 +0000 UTC]

Some of the funniest, no doubt

I dunno, public transit is a great way to run into...
Interesting people, I guess is the word

And man, running red lights is so ignorant and ...
Well, obviously dangerous
But some people like to live on the Dark Side, I guess...

Hamptons Jedi Outfitters. They did an AWESOME job. It is expensive but you get the quality you pay for.

And ironically I have another con appearance in this outfit tomorrow!

You really do have an intense stance in this! I think this is really emphasised by the light reflecting off the clenched fists. Someone could photoshop in a darkened military corridor and it would easily translate, like an official movie still/promo shot. Kylo Ren the early (dark side) years?

RensKnight In reply to Howlisher [2016-06-09 14:42:16 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Kylo Ren's mannerisms have been some of the easiest for me to mimic and to stay in naturally while cosplaying. I am not naturally the most feminine person in terms of how I move, and I actually had the shock while rewatching TFA of realizing that I needed only exaggerate my natural behavior a little to go into character. (My thought at one point, watching Ren on the march: "Oh my God, THAT'S how I look to other people!")

I am so glad the look works for you despite my short stature! I also had a great photographer...I appreciated his help with setting the pose. I'm hoping to work with him some more at a con in November, especially as I get more and more familiar with the ins and outs of my costume.

(BTW, another reason I wanted to do this cosplay: I am small enough that I don't have to bind my chest or do anything. I knew I could bring off this look naturally.)

What and how u make this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RensKnight In reply to Silversmicee [2016-05-25 00:55:23 +0000 UTC]

My robes came from Hampton's Jedi Outfitters, and they made them to my measurements.  They are NOT cheap, but I found the result to be quite precise, and I was very pleased with the job they did and the level of customer service.

The only part of the costume I'm partly responsible for is my mask.  I modified a Black Series helmet by removing the electronics, sealing the cracks (need to redo this for the next con because I dropped my mask once and messed some stuff up), and redoing the paint job.

Silversmicee In reply to RensKnight [2016-05-25 00:59:53 +0000 UTC]

Hmm alright thank you!
I'm trying to find a good (and possibly cheap) way to make one for BCC in August.

Here are a couple links I looked at before I decided to go wild with mine:

youtu.be/XOpq08pj3WA
youtu.be/yeeTUDUrESU

Also, some have said the Xcoser outfit is okay. For me, because of my small size, I ultimately decided I needed to go the custom-tailored route. That can be accomplished fairly cheaply like in the first video I linked, or by going the route I did and having a professional make a bespoke costume.
