Thanks for the tutorial. I have some prismas but I wasn't quite sure what to do with them. Also, I don't think they smell so bad.

Great tutorial, marking the places you don't color in is a great tip for me since I just seem to zone in onto the color and just color away xD

Thanks for a nice beginners tutorial!
I was wondering a) What you mean by making sure the paper is saturated? (To me, originally watercolor-artist that means first laying a coat of pure water and letting it dry...) and b) if you know if there's a substantial difference between promarkers and trias? I'm mostly wondering if they are appropriate to mix with eachother or if differences in quality or anything else will show?

This tutorial is great. ^_^ He's a very pretty boy by the way. It's very helpful. I've just got my first set of copic markers for christmas, and they're very different and harder to use than I'd expected. So this has been a lot of help. The hardest thing so far has been getting a smooth covering without lots of lines and splodges. So I'm going to take a lot of your tips and hopefully improve. One question.. What do you mean by saturating the paper before hand? Sorry if you've already mentioned that and I'm being an idiot. >.<

Renah-Lily In reply to kaellie [2006-10-30 05:38:36 +0000 UTC]

These days, I mostly use Tria (or at least, trying to replace my collection with mostly Tria markers). I also have Promarker (cheapy tria marker) and prismacolours. I have about 50 markers in my collection.

wich ones would be the best? so far i havn't ever used any markers othere than my little sister's cheap grade-school ones.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Renah-Lily In reply to kaellie [2006-10-31 06:11:33 +0000 UTC]

I'd go for either Prismacolour or Promarker - just because it's a good price, and does the job.

Markers like Copic and Tria - your paying alot more money for features, like being able to refill them/ ability to use an airbrush system, and changing the tips.

It's better to start with prismacolour or promarker, then if you get really into marker colour (or use alot of certain colours) then branch off into the expensive markers.

oh - and make sure you use your markers on good paper - like card stock, bristol board, watercolour paper, or marker paper. If you use the proper paper, the markers won't bleed everywhere.

yay~! okay. i think i'm gonna go prisma~ i know their coloring pencils are good, soo.. ^^

Renah-Lily In reply to kaellie [2006-11-01 02:44:22 +0000 UTC]

only thing I forgot to mention with prismas, is that they smell kinda strong. (not as bad as a sharpie marker, but they have a smell to them compaired to other marker brands) But other than that, they are good markers. And yeah - I love their colouring pencils too (I use them as well).

Thank you so much for this tutorial! very detailed and wonderful step by step ^^
I got prismcolors and wondering how much are promarkers?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Renah-Lily In reply to LittleHikari [2006-09-21 07:33:14 +0000 UTC]

promarkers are usually around the same price as prismacolours - however, i find the prismacolours have a finer tip than the promarkers. ;
If you wanted something better than prismacolour - I'd go for Tria or Copic markers (but yeah, they cost alot of $$). Prismacolours are pretty good though - just they smell a little strong (so open a window when using them)

I also use Promarkers Do you know if there's any difference between Promarkers and Copics? (except that copics are more expensive) Are there any differences between the results? Thanx for a good tutorial!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Renah-Lily In reply to Nanimal [2006-07-21 19:10:48 +0000 UTC]

I find most of the art markers to have the same results - I've heard anime artists claim copics are better - my best guess is it's because it's a japanese product - I found the results to be the same. I've heard some people say copics don't bleed as easy - that's untrue, because I find the cause of bleeding to be 100% of the fault of the paper the person is using - so yeah, go for a marker paper, card stock, or bristol board. In the end, the markers are the same.

However, the real difference between markers are the "bells and whistles" of the product. Promarkers - most of my markers are that brand, is good for that price. Prismacolour markers are very similar to Promarkers - but they have a thinner tip, and smell REALLY bad.
What sets Tria and Copics from Promarker - is that you can re-fill them, and change nibs. However... in reality, the refills cost around $13, so you really must use that colour alot to fork out that much cash. So what you are really paying for, is the options on the marker - but the end result is the same.

However, since you do use Promarker - if you wanted to upgrade and get a more range of colours - be able to refill, change marker tips, and get 3 nibs (one fat, one thin like the promarker, and another super thin) - I recomend Tria markers to you, instead of Copic. Tria is the same brand of Promarker, the air brush system and colours are the same, and sold in the same stores.

I really started filling up my collection with Promarkers, and I'm buying more Tria ones, in the colours Promarkers don't have, or I buy the Tria verison of a promarker colour, for marker colours I use alot.

Thank you for the detailed answer! I think I'll buy a few Tria's and try them out. But Tria markers are as expensive as Copics, at least here in Sweden.

Thanks for this tutorial. I bought my first 6 markers today and have been playing around tryign to get used tothem.

The biggest thing I got from this was to work quickly. I was wondering why i got streaks from when i coloured large areas, now I know to do it quickly and the strokes blend together. So helpful!

I use Promarker, Tria and Prismacolour markers. My art store sells them, and I find buying the markers in person to be best so I can try them out.

usually those alcohol based, markers (like copic, tria, prismacolour) will give you the even, streak free colour. Expensive, smelly, but very good markers. *passes out from the fumes*

i'm not very good at picking out the dark colors is it okay to just layer over and over again for everything?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Renah-Lily In reply to Mewshi [2005-08-26 02:35:06 +0000 UTC]

yeah, you can layer probably at least a dozen times - ^____^;
hehehe... thats what I did when all I had was 12 markers.

I think: [link] this drawing I did - the dark clothing was like half a dozen layers of french grey.... ^____^;
I've heard other people say that people should just buy the lightest colours, and only use those. You could also just buy like a mid tone grey, and only use it for shadows.

Mewshi In reply to Renah-Lily [2005-08-26 02:54:08 +0000 UTC]

i want to get the prismacolor set for christmas... and i can't get anything higher than the 48 set should i go with that or a diffrent brand or a smaller set?
just wondering =3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Renah-Lily In reply to Mewshi [2005-08-26 03:08:24 +0000 UTC]

hmmmm I'd either go for the prismacolour set, or a letraset promarker set. I found the "comic/manga" promarker set to be really good (comes with some marker paper and an ink pen), but you'd probably want at least another "primary colour" set to go with it. The comic set is good because it comes with lots of skin tones.
the 48 prismacolour set will probably keep you very happy for a long time, you could manage with a 24 set though. After awhile, just buy colours in singles - because you'll know what colours you like to use the most.
The only thing with prismacolour is the smell... it's very smelly! Like a sharpie marker smell.
