Description Recently I found out about a railroad museum near Darmstadt, Germany. They have some sidings full of old rotten and 'cannibalized' wagons grown together with weeds and blackberry bushes...

Dear sprayers kids, I respect and admire graffiti art, but please stay away of this site. Your 5-minute-beginner-bombings and whack-ass characters just don't fit a wagon from the 40's!

b/w conversion via LAB mode, contrast pushed with Channel Mixer (monochrome), additional gradient layer

LOL!

This reminds me of the train yard that can be found 15-30 mins away from where I live. It's also attacked my amateur graffiti artist.

Thanks. Oh, that day was fabulous - the sky was just like one big ass softbox - a thin layer of high fog with the sun shining through. I wish these conditions would occure more often

Nice motive,

An abandoned train always does have this eery feel to it. Makes me feel like going out and do some exploring again myself.

max!

gorgeous tones...

i assume the gradient layer is responsible for the light effect, right?...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rawimage In reply to mgilpin [2006-12-31 11:43:17 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. There is some slight amount of brownish red to make the black warmer.
And yes, the gradient adds some kind of vignette feeling to it. Because of the back-light the sky looked boring so I added another gradient..

mgilpin In reply to rawimage [2007-01-01 01:20:55 +0000 UTC]

i hope you don't mind a couple more questions, but how do you add the reddish-brown?... with an adjustment layer and the color balance?... or some other way?... and do you select the shadows when you do and do you apply the change to the whole image?...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rawimage In reply to mgilpin [2007-01-01 14:37:57 +0000 UTC]

I often use the gradient map (as adjustment layer) with black as shadows, (in this case) dark red somewhere in the mids and a warm redish white as lights. Because it's hard for me to find the right values, I do the fine tuning with decreasing the opacity of the adjustment layer. Other ppl use the duplex mode, but I think the gradient map has more potential...
...In this particular case I duplicated the image layer (ctrl-j) and applied a gradient map directly to it. Then I changed the layer mode from normal to overlay with arround 30% opacity to increase the shadows even more. As you can see there's not much left of the red. My goal wasn't a duotone, but a warm b&w..

mgilpin In reply to rawimage [2007-01-20 02:29:01 +0000 UTC]

ok... i tried this... but i can't figure how to use the gradient map... any clues/suggestions?...

(i was, however, able to due something similar by making an adjustment layer with the channel mixer)...

rawimage In reply to mgilpin [2007-01-20 12:06:42 +0000 UTC]

...i wish i simply could record a little sequence and send it to you

a gradient map easily exchanges the existing color and luminance information by adjusting two or more colors as a gradient. e.g. if you have an image which shows a gradient from black to white and you replace black by green you'll get a gradient from green to white...

if you open the gradient map (as an adjustment layer or under image/settings/gradient map) you'll see a gradient made out of the actual back and foreground colors. if you click on this gradient another window pops up giving you further access to adjust the gradient. in the upperleft part of the window you should see some presets and at the bottom a gradient with some markers for shadows, mids and lights above and below it. double click on the markers below it and another window, containing a color palette, will pop up. by adjusting black as shadows, white as lights and a dark red somewhere in the mids, you can achieve a (s)lightly red toned b/w

i finally found time to try the gradient map again... and, thanks to your instructions, i understood perfectly this time... thanks!...
