It's not so much that I'm anti-anime, I do support the 2% of anime that doesn't suck. After all, drawing in an anime style is the root of how I developed my current "style" (lernin 2 draw, doing it wrong). Granted, over the years I have developed my own style that is more simplified, stylized realism than anything else.

Not to say one is better than the other, but the point is developing your own style - something that is unique and creative, not just copying shitty Sonic and DBZ styles.

The problem is, many anime styles, like comic book styles, are watered-down, simple styles that almost anyone can pick up a pencil and replicate, without having any real skill or talent, or knowing anything about anatomy and structure. Essentially, it's art for nonartists. Granted, there are some really beautiful anime works out there. Very detailed and lovely - but these were done by people who know what the fuck they're doing.

Some people think that because they can draw crap like this [link] [link] that they're super 1337 "artists", but in the real world, your pencil-on-lined-paper scribblings and your base tracings are laughable in the art world. These people have never stopped to study what a real face looks like - don't know a damn thing about muscle or bone structure, proportion, and don't spend time trying to develop technique or skill. Granted, I was like this at first - but I eventually started to grow up. After all, it's not the mistakes we make that make us a terrible artists, it's the mistakes we continue to make, and excuse.

It's true, anime is a stylization - it's not supposed to look like realism. But that's the problem with stylization, it's based on realism. You have to know what you're drawing before you stylize it.

tl;dr: if you have no desire to learn anatomy or develop style and skill, then you're not really serious about art, you're just serious about anime.
