Description As I bet some people now know, they're doing a Muppets Comic Book (in fact, some DAers are providing covers and things!) I heard out about this the closing day of the San Diego Comic Con 2008, so I didn't get a chance to talk to them at the show about it, but I want to draw for this SO BAD. Roger Langridge is doing most of the writing and drawing, and I've been following his career for years, his work fits perfectly and he'll do a wonderful wonderful job. As a fan, I can't wait to read it. As an artist, I want to do it too! While I am under the impression Roger is doing most everything, at least for the beginning stages, I know they want other artists and writers involved too, so I went and followed Boom Studios (the publisher) Website's submissions policy, and posted to their forums. It's been quite some time, they're gearing for the launch, and I haven't heard anything yet, which I'm sure bodes not well, but I'm hoping they'll have a portfolio review or somesuch at ComicCon 09, and I'll get to talk to someone in person.

Here's some sample art I came up with, I picked something that would let me draw as many of the Main Muppets as possible, to show off them in my style. It's just the pretitle sequence where they introduce the guest start set to comics, with me as the guest star (boy, I have some ego on me!) but it seemed apt, and I even stuck some good muppety feeling jokes in there. Whatcha think? Would you like to see me involved with the muppets in whatever official capacity they'd let me? Me too!

I think my favorite is the Swedish Chef. And Sam the Eagle is basically my grandpa.

I may try again at some point, I have lots of my own projects distracting me at the moment. Roger Langridge is the head honcho of Muppet comics, and his work is absolutely fantastic, I've loved it for years.

Um, I don't know. He's a random waiter they always seem to have floating around in restaurant scenes, don't know if he even has a name. I'd call him Snootly if I were them.

Its a bit late for me to jump in on this, but I think you captured the spirit of the show very well. Especially with those grumpy old men.

And it's never to late to jump in on things! Jump jumpy jump!

I've never watched much of the Muppets, maybe because it wasn't broadcasted in Germany. So I can't tell you whether the dialogues fit the characters, but...

Awesome, as always, Mr. Friesen : )
Although I do wonder if your penguins always threaten you with an axe.

aw, no German Muppetyness? You're missing out, find some on youtube.

the Penguins don't exactly threated, they just give me dirty looks and make me feel guilty.

Love your wacky kermit picture. : )

The only Muppetyness I've ever seen is the Muppets Christmas-Story.
Sadly, YouTube doesn't work at my working place .__.

But I do see an axe above your head, Mr. Friesen. What's it for? Decoration? xD

Yeah, I do, too

is that the one based on the dickens with Michael Caine? Because that was rather good in my opinion. The muppet Show is the best though, it wasn't ever bothered with having a plot, and was just silly.

That's actually my lamp -- sorry, I suppose it does look a bit like an axe.

Hee hee. I could have drawin it clearer, it looks really sharp in that one.

Whether or not you actually get to work on the comic, this is still brilliant. I think the style and the jokes are all very fitting to the characters.

Well, a couple of things:
Roger can't handle it all, it's coming out monthly for crying out loud
a) You do know the comics are begun about 6 months in advance, right? Roger is WELL in control of his output.
b) He's not going to be the only artist working on Muppet comics. There's a rotation system in place.

I edited my description a bit so as too seem less arrogant, I had a poor choice of words indeed. I watch what I say very carefully, as this sort of thing happens more often than I would care to admit, but I can't always seem to contain my ego entirely. Thanks for the pointers.

Hi Mimi-Na! I just posted a comment on your Muppet Variant Cover when I saw this pop into my inbox. Fun with coincidences!

A. Yes, I got one of the cool little sampler comics at ComicCon last year, so I know Muppet Comics have been in the pipeline for 9 months now, and that Roger has been working on this for even longer than that (Pigs In Space for Disney Adventures before they went defunct). I have written and drawn four 100 page graphic novels in the past 5 years, and am quite aware of the lag time between writing and drawing. You can't just whip these things out, even if you are speedy.

Roger has made a point of mentioning on his blog that he won't be doing it all, doesn't have the time to do it all even if they asked him to, and that there are going to be other writers and artists working on it.

Maybe I could have phrased that 'for crying out loud' bit better, it wasn't a dig at Roger or anything like that, he's fantastic. Nor was I implying "I'll step in and save the day from these people messing things up" That's even more arrogant than I'm capable of : )

B. Yes, I also know he's not the only other artist working on the book. Aren't they doing Muppet Robin Hood simultaneously to the Show comic, written and drawn by somebody else who's names elude me for the moment?

So yes, I know there are going to be alot of writers and artists involved, yourself included, who are all going to contribute to making it a muppetastic book. I'm hoping to wangle the privilege of becoming one of them, part of the team. I'm a comics professional, I love the muppets, think my sensibilities would suit them quite well, as I count their writing style as one of my major influences, and I am actively looking for work right now. A trifecta of four!

What do you think of my drawing style for them btw? Roger said they picked him originally, because he'd be bringing his own unique flair, and I thought that was a very cool approach. Unique but still whimsical and fun. Any chance you can put in a good word for me?

Here's what Roger said when I emailed him my sample in August of last year:

"Hi Ray,

Thanks for sending me the Muppet sample -- I like your style a lot,
very colourful and original - almost a children's book kind of style (I
have two young kids, so I see an awful lot of those, and I prefer a lot
of them to most comics I see these days). I seriously doubt I'll be
consulted about possible guest artists, though -- I am but a humble cog
in their mighty machine. But they're planning on doing a number of
other Muppet books further down the line as I understand it, so there
will be room for more artists eventually, I'm sure.

Thanks for the kind wishes -- I'm going to need them!

- Roger"

I agree with Roger's assessment that your art has a whimsical quality which would look right at home in children's books.
Boom's editor-in-chief has final word on who is selected and he has his own tastes on the kind of art styles he likes for his company, that I'm just not privy to.

Like Roger, I am not really in any position to 'ut in a word', I just consider myself fortunate enough to be getting work from them myself.

I'm actually working on a children's book at the moment for another company, although it's going to be composed of claymation figures superimposed onto water color backgrounds, so not this style at all. But thanks! I am in favor of whimsy.

Do you mind if I ask how you came to work for Boom? Did you approach them or did they approach you? Forgive me if I'm prying, I'm just interested.

Are you going to be at the San Diego Comic Con this year? If so, please swing by my booth, I'd love to say hi.

re. San Diego - I don't know if I'm going yet.

As for how I got the job - it was a combination of knowing who to contact when I heard about these comics and my art auditions being accepted by Boom and Disney. Before you ask, my contacts are private and I'm not going to reveal them, sorry.

Good luck with your children's book!

Ahahaha, that is totally cute and awesome! The humor captures the show perfectly!

At first I didn't understand why there was a second Mr. Friesen under the table, and then as I looked at it more, I understood that you're controlling a muppet version of yourself. Is that right, or am I still looking at it wrong? XD

Yay! Glad you think so! I know I'll get to draw them in an offical capacity someday, I've allready decided.

Yes, there was supposed to be puppeteer me under the table, although I think that was a bit confusing. You got it perfectly though, so no worries!
