Description This year the moss seems to be resisting the winter. It looks so delightful... I wonder can you eat it?

Location:
In the forest at my back door. It's actually shot steeply down from the top of a very high hill in a densely wooded part of the forest. The entire area is covered in this lush spongy moss which looks like a richly thick green carpet... and so very soft under the foot! The afternoon sun adds some extra (much needed) warmth.

The light has a wonderful calming quality in this photo. Your photos generally make me want to grab my camera, visit the next forest, and try to find spots like this.

the colors look gorgeous... but you might try selecting the dark trees and lowering the red in the shadows... kinda distracting.

then it'll be perfect!

I really love this picture, you accomplished one thing I have an extremely hard time doing... that's depth. Maybe you could give me a tip or something.. but all my photos come out "flat" if I was to take this picture (maybe its my camera?) it wouldn't appear as if you were looking down hill.

Thanks a lot... and yes, there may be a few things you might want to try (because cameras undoubtedly tend to make things a lot flatter than they appear to the eye). Using a lens at the widest angle will always increase the apparent depth. This pic was shot using a 10mm angle (the widest I could find) so that helped a lot. On my 'Alchemy' picture I couldn't shoot very wide with the lens I had on the camera, so I made a panorama out of a number of overlapped shots to increase the angle. This all works quite well as long as there are some key features in the scene that can act as visual cues for the perspective. A nifty way to achieve that is with a low camera angle (very close to the ground) and/or as close as possible to a foreground object (as your main subject). If you use a small aperture, having something clearly recognisable in the distance can also exaggerate apparent depth. The same applies to light, and even though bright light and dark shadows increase the difficulty in getting a good tonal range, they surely add a lot of drama and depth to an otherwise ordinary scene. Anyway, you already look like you are doing really well with your shots you are making, so best of luck in the future!

I am SO jealous of your back yard. This is my favorite type of forest place, with all the green and moss and the tall straight trees without too much ground cover choking the trunks. LOVE IT!
