Description
Taking a moment from her gathering, Spottedleaf looks up to the churning sky and wonders what omens will befall her clan.I've been wanting to do a picture of Spottedleaf for some time now, and tonight I was in the mood for some interesting fur...so it was perfect timing. This started off with the intention of only being a sketch...buuuut I kind of went over the deep end lol; I'm very happy though.Β Now before anyone complains...tortoiseshells by North American definition generally have NO white on them (those are calicos), so because of that bias this is how she's always been in my mind.
She's also got a few stems of Catmint in her mouth, if your wondering.

I prefer her as plain tortie! I only give her white because just about every tortie cat in Warriors has white, and in OoTS she's finally been described with white *sigh* I can't tell people not to make her calico anymore. But at least Warriors SSS is still wrong, because they forgot that she's tortie on her face (although they do most designs wrong XD Yellow Longtail, purple-eyed Ravenpaw, Greystripe with brown eyes, Rusty a golden colour with no stripes, and Whitestorm looks young...)

Glad toΒ see I'm not alone! I feel it suits her and can't see her any other way...except maybe a bit of white belly fur.Β I really don't mind all the different interpretations of the adjectives, I just hate when the only comment people make is "um actually it says it should look this way" as if I haven't read a damn word, so I always tend to explain myself lol. >.<
I totally agree with you on the book art though. Getting eye colours wrong is so basic lol, even some of the covers have them wrong which astounds me. I think there are even a few inconsistencies in the books too, I just can't recall where.

Not to be mean but tortoiseshells CAN have white on their belly, paws, chest and maybe a few other spots. They are tortoiseshell and white if they do. If they have a lot of white like around their face or back and the brown and black spots are large, they are a calico. So if they have white on them that does not mean they are a calico. The people that live next to my house have a tortoiseshell and white and it is amazing! I really love the art though! But I do see Spottedleaf as a tortoiseshell and white. What a twat; reported the image for copyright violation to google, but it looks like a clueless teenager to me. Why anyone would use someone elses art for their profile image while saying their a storybook artist is just disrespectful; damn kids. sigh XD I feel like such a curmudgeon, even at 30.

Goddammit, wish I could draw like this <3 (I can draw...somewhat like this traditionally, but I can't draw /anything/ on a computer program, can't paint either, can only sketch)

See I find that interesting because Im almost the other way around now. I'm so comfortable with drawing digitally that I feel a little awkward when I go back to traditional. I think a portion of it is I know if I make a mistake it's a lot harder to remove and fix...where as I can be lazier with photoshop LOL.
It's a lot of work and frustration, but I use a LOT of references throughout a picture's process, so that's my main recommendation.

I find traditional sketching so much easier XD I find whenever I try to draw on a computer I tend to get pains in my wrist (I fractured it once and it's never been the same) I also find that when sketching, you can just work the mistake into the drawing, it's much harder to do that with digital drawing...But that's just my opinion XD I do practice digital drawing by tracing over certain images, it's okay practice, but whenever I try to do it without tracing it's so hard XD
