Description

Arizona has a law where doctors are not to tell women if there is a prenatal issue in fear of the woman getting an abortion [link]

Rick Santorum speaks out against these tests for the same reason.

WHAT

THE

FUCK?

Seriously?

I know I would need to know if the kid has special needs so I can be ready for it. DUH! I swear people are getting dumber.

People need to know these things. But you shouldn't be forced to get an abortion if your kid has problems either. You should have the right to choose no matter what.

I don't think you can test for special needs like autism though.

Not yet anyway, but many conditions can be detected early.

But there's nothing wrong with being autistic. You shouldn't abort just because you kid will have autism.

Old comment, but whether you should or shouldn't abort just because her kid will be autistic (or any other condition) is only up to the woman and the woman alone.

True. I was just making a comment on the medical technology now...

That's the dumbest thing I ever heard. Women shouldn't terminate a pregnancy if the kid has something like Down syndrome, but they should still be informed so they can make plans and know what to expect. That's one of the reasons people have prenatal testing.

In regards to fatal disorders, women definitively need to be informed. It is (or should be) their choice if they want to go thru with the pregnancy or not. Some women choose not to though because it's a very emotional and painful situation to give birth to a baby who will die early. A friend of the family went thru that. She and her husband opted to have the baby anyways, but at least they had the choice. (Their baby had a fatal genetic disorder; she died within hours of being born. )

One more thing that bothers me is if the prenatal testing reveals a potential fatal problem for mom related to the pregnancy. Why in the world would you choose to put mom's health at risk without her consent? That's something the woman needs to decide for herself.

I really hope that the stupid law makes exceptions for things like that.

Apparently this law exists to prevent aborting 'planned' and otherwise healthy babies with nonfatal problems simply because they are disabled somehow. I guess that's a legitimate concern. Some parents become very horrified when they learn their baby has Down syndrome or something like that. Because they think the worst. They don't know that the disorder varies between people or about how well people with physical disabilities can adapt to their condition. It's better to put parents in touch with other parents who have kids with the condition first rather than aborting the baby. (On a side-note, I'm pretty sure that most people who have abortions thought very hard about the decision prior to having one.)

But jeez!! It's stupid not allowing parents to know in advance that their kid has a health problem or disability; knowing about it lets parents prepare for a special needs child. Parents often complain about not knowing in advance because they were not prepared, and now this law wants to take away something that lets them know in advance?

Hopefully Arizona will get rid of this law soon.

I don't know if I'd go that far. I want to see the Grand Canyon. Maybe I'll just vacation at the Native American-run sites around there. Technically their reservations aren't even part of the United States! (Plus it will help them economically.)

Babies born with defects don't always end up living happily ever after like these idiots want us to believe. There have been many cases where the baby was abandoned by the mother shortly after birth or abused and neglected. I myself don't have any defects that run in my family, but I don't think I'd be emotionally and financially responsible to deal with a baby that has birth defects. I think it's cruel to force a child who has so many birth defects to be born. I love how these idiots automatically assume that a woman will abort her baby if she finds out it's defective. Most of the time, some of these women don't even want to abort the kid, so why hide something crucial from her? Even if she doesn't abort the kid, she should still know about its problems so she can deal with it if she does keep it.

PurplePhoneixStar In reply to NatariSaru [2012-04-22 15:11:00 +0000 UTC]

Yes. You need time to come to terms with the fact before the kid is born because it would be more of a shock if it was born and you find out then.

i just don't get it. these stupid laws are so sexist and biased. the ignorant assholes who pass them don't deserve to even consider telling women that they don't have the right to know what her baby will be like. fuck them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PurplePhoneixStar In reply to shadowpiratemonkey7 [2012-03-31 22:15:57 +0000 UTC]

Most women wouldn't abort anyway. This law is full of fail.

shadowpiratemonkey7 In reply to PurplePhoneixStar [2012-03-31 23:16:04 +0000 UTC]

exactly! i support abortion and having the choice, but i definitely would NOT have an abortion, because i have extreme attachments to anything that belongs to me, sooo... XD yeah.
what really irks me is that doctors can't be charged for murder if the woman AND baby dies. it would be the doctor's fault, yet they can't get in trouble? why is abortion the doctor's business anyway?

Some issues can be dealt with while the baby is still in the womb like fetal surgery. [link]

I'd kind of would like to know what's up with my baby before it's born so that I can be prepared to deal with its issues, not abort it.

Just because it has an ISSUE doesn't mean she's gonna get an abortion.

What if she wants it, and wants to be prepared? What if she needs special medical treatment for the new baby?

AAAAGGGGH ARIZONA IS THE WORST STATE EVER.

This has to be one of the most ridiculous laws I've ever heard of... there are doctors who will use this as an excuse not to tell patients a ton of important things, and chaos will ensue. Why are women's rights being trampled? What happened to equality?

I don't know, but I'm saying if they die because the doctor is unwilling to tell of any problems with the pregnancy they are murders in my opinion. I know the law won't recognize them as that, but the person's blood will be on their hands as far as I'm concerned.
