Edit: I realized that I did the comet reflection wrong and fixed it. Please tell me if I should change it back.I drew this back in December and about a week ago I found the file on my computer. It was just the digital lineart, but it was pretty good so I colored it and added the background.
I think it was originally for the Pokedorks' Pokemon of the Month...
Anyways, it's a Starmie floatin' in the ocean during a full moon with a meteor shower. Which may or may not be because of Starmie's move, Cosmic Power.
I really like how this came out... Starmie is so awesome! And I just realized digital art is a lot easier when you place the tablet on a table while drawing and coloring XD

Your advice was very helpful, and I do think I'll edit it so that the sky isn't monotone and the comet is blended at the nucleus
I'll try to fix the yellow jewelry part, but shading yellows is pretty difficult in my opinion. It's already pretty light so highlights don't stand out well, and darker yellows are pretty gross. So you would have to use orange to put shadows, which looks a bit weird. Any tips?
Thanks for telling me, but I don't think there's anything I can do about the Starmie lop-sided thing. I would ruin everything if I tried

Is it photoshop you use?
Recently in photoshop I've been playing around with my shading and I'm fairly happy with the results so far. What I usually do is shade for a bit with the darker shades of the colour (in this case yellow,) until I get to the point that you're at. Then I shade with the most predominate colour in the background- which in this case would be blue (or you could try purple.) After you've done that, lower the opacity and maybe play around with some of the layer type things (dunnow the technical term...but the drop-down menu that has things like 'multiply' and 'overlay.') Sometimes that helps with the shading. Also, if you add the darker colour you can sometimes you back and add white for the highlights and it doesn't look too odd.
Fair enough, it would be more work than it's worth to mess around with the Starmie at this point. I just thought I'd point it out for future reference. XD

I don't really know any technical stuff or tricks, I just scan, lineart, and color... I usually don't even use multiple layers
But one of the reasons I finished this was because I wanted to start doing more digital art, so any technical things you could say might help.

To be perfectly honest, I know practically nothing about photoshop and any fancy 'tricks' I've learned have been flukes that I've found out from playing around with it. So I'd suggest just doing that a lot, play with it and you'll find out different technique's and tricks.
I'd still maybe see if there is a function that lets you use multiple layers (even if it is just for a couple of layers,) and change the opacity on, I think it would really help. But like a said, play around with it and you'll find stuff out. XD

This looks very nice.. I have to say I love the full moon and comet especially, it reminds me of the summer of 2007 when there was a comet in the night skies.. I actually draw a picture WITH the comet, actually!! [link]

This is an excellent piece. The moon, the stars and the comet are all spectacular! Pretty nice starmie to boot.
The water and the reflections therein look great as well, but The one thing I noticed is that the comet seems closer to the moon in the reflection than in the sky. Maybe it just looks like that because the moon in the water has more shine to it, but the reflection still looks slightly cluttered.
Considering what I'm like with reflections, I probably don't have a leg to stand on, but I thought I'd give you the critique you asked for. That's the only crits I can think about here. I just love that sky!

alright, lets see,
first off this is fucking amazing i looks great the water is amazing and the color blends are perfect.
but, (here goes crapy crit)
the starmie looks off, like, the yellow part is off, as is his jewel mabey moving them over some might help?
The sky looks bland in comparison to the rest of the picture, but i can understand if you just got tired of it, because it looks like a lot of work.
maybe some color blands of dark blue or purple and maybe some grey? they might look cool! <3

(Not one for writing critiques...
First of all, your water looks amazing, especially the way you drew reflections. One thing I have to say though is that the night sky is rarely pure black, but dark blue, maybe a blend of multiple blues. Your comet tail looks amazing, but I'd recommend blending the comet's head a bit more, there's a spot of blue that's a bit distracting. Overall, great piece, I love the painting-like quality of it, it definately caught my eyes when I saw the thumbnail. (And do I need to say that Starmies are awesome?
