Simply love it. Β You're inspiring me to pull open Maya and give a go at some mech modeling!

Astounding!!!!! I would really like to talk to you about this amazing render. I am thinking about a project and I know your input would be invaluable to its success.

Just out of curiousity, what do you use for reference material (if anything)? I would very much like to make a few scale model clan mechs with hydraulic actuation and computer control, but I don't really have any schematics or scale diagrams of any sort to base my designs on, besides pictures like this, screenshots from MechWarrior games, and pictures of miniatures.

There's an abundance of official artwork that I use for reference. If there is a schematic available for a mech then that's an excellent place to start. (All of the original 3050 clan mechs have front and side line drawings.) Sometimes taking a look at what other people have done with a particular mech is a good source for ideas. Sometimes all you have is one poorly drawn black and white picture.
Either way I always make the mechs look the way I want them to no matter what the original artwork looks like. If something looks better different then I make it so. That's a good thing to remember because what is the point of simply replicating something someone else has already made? Be yourself as an artist is my motto.

Yes, I've noticed the prevalence of those poorly drawn black and white pictures... *cough Marauder IIC cough* I would very much like to create some hydraulically actuated 5 foot tall-ish models (in the stead of having advanced myomer technologies) but I find I have very little to base my designs on scale wise, motor function wise, etc. I suppose in the end I will end up creating most of the design specifications myself.
Really though, you are right. There isn't anything wrong with introducing personal creativity and judgement into already established designs. That's good advice, thank you.

it is sad that battletech wont let mechwarrior use the models anymore and thus the problem with mechwarrior 5's release.

It's not battletech actually it's harmonry gold. They aren't allowing mechwarrior to use the warhammer, rifleman, or marauder in the game.

Timber Wolf is the proper (Clan) name for it. Mad Cat was the name the Inner Sphere gave it, because it was a new and unrecognized design. To quote the book, "because of its utterly mad configuration." I strongly recommend Michael Stackpole's trilogy on the clan invasion, "Blood of Kerensky" - by far, one of the best storylines ever written in BattleTech fiction.

Wasn't called Mad Cat because it resembled both a Marauder and a Catapult, and one IS MechWarrior's targeting Computer kept switching between Marauder (MAD) and Catapult (CAT)?

Yes, someone already pointed this out. I was getting my fluff text mixed up, that's where the name "Loki" came from (proper term Hellbringer).

Darkton93 In reply to Kieve-KRS [2011-07-10 19:00:06 +0000 UTC]
Actually, I believe the Hellbringer was called the Loki because of its utterly mad configuration. The Mad Cat's Inner Sphere designation comes from the fact that it resembles the Marauder and the Catapult.

Fantastic job, as always. Your attention to detail is superb.
If I'm being perfectly honest though? I prefer the more classic look to the legs, like the ones on the older Mad Dog model.
Regardless of personal taste, it's still gorgeous. I'm surprised not to have seen it in your gallery before now (a raw model render, I mean).

/facepalm.

Punakettu In reply to Kieve-KRS [2010-06-27 21:29:37 +0000 UTC]
Well I never liked those legs. They have always been the weakest aspect of the Timby and Mad dog in all illustrations. Mine or someone else's. They just never convinced me to be able to support the weight of the mech, much less make it move.
Yes it's an update. I never get tired of tweakin it. This was the first model I ever made, although there is nothing left of the original model. Hasn't been in a long time.

Awesome! Love the Mad Cat.
Only thing that strikes me a little bit odd ist the shape of the cockpit windows. Aren't they reaching further down?
π: 0 β©: 1
Punakettu In reply to Freeport [2010-06-27 21:22:58 +0000 UTC]
Maybe. But the mech has too big windows to begin with. That's the last thing I'd want to have in a mech.

Not sure how you can improve the model after this honestly, except maybe making a workable omni-pod system.

Punakettu. what are you using to model these in?
Any chance of getting a version that will be usable in Poser or DS? If so, I'd be happy to try and texture it.

Punakettu In reply to JohnScatha [2010-06-19 15:36:11 +0000 UTC]
I do most of my models with Wings 3D.
I also don't handout my models to just anyone asking for them.
π: 0 β©: 1
JohnScatha In reply to Punakettu [2010-06-19 20:19:33 +0000 UTC]
If you think that was what I meant by it, then I don't even want it. I made an offer to texture them, provided it came in another format. I do NOT need hand-outs.
