Description I was reading about samurai today, trying to get a bearing on what I wanted to submit as an entry. Seems most samurai were illiterate before the 14th century. They didn't know how to read. Really, reading was seen to be rather un-masculine and for skinny wise men and scientists of the day. Later though, it was expected of them...

Just a fun fact I thought I'd share. Also, the circular crest displayed on my samurai's banner is a family crest, called a Kamon. Mon itself refers to any crest in general. The crest of the emperor was always a specific image of a chrysanthemum.

As for the anthro, it is a Japanese Marten with his winter coat. Bright ,golden yellow with black paws and a white face.

Wish me luck in the Anthro Weekly Challenge.

This is fabulous!

I really love the subtle background work. Also the cloth of the banner was very nicely done.

Koodos!

Nice attention to detail on the fox and background. I like the use of color in the background, it adds a lot to the whole image and is mute enough not to detract from the subject. ^__^

Can you give me some info on how the samurai battle standards are supposed to attach. i thought they used an upside down L wooden frame, but i am probably wrong. I am thinking about making one and i could use the help.

Sweet art by the way

well, to be honest, I left out another piece to this pole. At the bottom, there is usually some short stub that stick out in the same horizontal angle as the top. That little piece can be used to be tied tightly into the holster on a saddle or on the "back" of a soldier.

I was under the impression that samurai were expected to read poetry and busy themselves with certain humanities at one point - that's when the warrior code and other such lore occurred, I guess when major fighting stopped in japan. but I'm no expert, I've only done light reading and watched a few specials on tv, haha. nice picture, though :] I'd love to see you do some asian-inspired backgrounds.

LoL, sorry, let me clarify... before the 14th century, most samurai were illiterate. Later, it was expected of them to become good readers, as well as be knowledgeable in dancing, poetry, mathematics, and tea. Yet, they only slowly became more educated. It greatly depended on their lifestyle, and the wealth their Lords.

YEAH that's it thanks. That kind of sucks, though, to fight but not be able to read?
