Description Commission for of their mare, Alteza Del Lago. I am extremely gracious that I got to draw such a gorgeous horse with one of my favorite coat colors. I enjoyed every moment working on this.

I am really happy with how this turned out. This is the first time I did an entire image in black and white before coloring it. Unfortunately livestream crashed on me at the end of the coloring stage so I don't have the video to share

Still working on getting that old George Stubbs feeling into the horse portraits I do. I feel like I have improved since my first one in 2011.
And as requested, I will be making a little tutorial on trees

This has been sitting in my inbox forever because I've been wanting to comment on this lovely piece. She looks like a red/claybank dun, which I agree is a lovely color on a horse.

You have definitely come a long ways from your first equine portraits! I live the diffused lighting, suggested by both the clouds in the sky and the vague shadow on the ground.

You did an excellent job on the detail and shading. I'm especially in love with her nostrils and muzzle. The range of tone is beautiful and the construction is spot-on.

There are a couple spots that are a little shaky anatomically, but some of them are within the range of what is possible so it could be the individual horse. However the length of the groove on the back cannons in particular that divides the bone from the ligaments seems to run a little deep into the fetlock jont.

The one thing that I don't like about the greyscale method is that it does not encourage one to incorporate color into the shadows. It technically can mimick the use of glazes in oil painting, which means it is possible to sneak in those environmental colors in the areas of reflected light and shadow that will help really settle your subject into its surroundings.

Again, fantastic work and I look forward to seeing more of it!

I almost teared up a little when I saw this after you finished (now I know how it feels when I paint peoples' past animals and they tear up). You caught her so perfectly, the background is just gorgeous, and the colors in her coat are beautiful! I wish the livestream would have worked, I would have LOVED to watch!
I'm also really glad you enjoyed working on this, I hate making people do things they don't want to. But I can't wait to get this printed and hung up on my bedroom wall! Thank you so much!!

How do you work from grayscale and turn into a color picture? Or do you have a tutorial reference?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Plaguedog In reply to Aspendragon [2012-07-27 00:35:02 +0000 UTC]

I am going to work on a tutorial soon But basically, in photoshop, you set a layer above what you want to color and set the layer style to "color" (I got some good results from soft light and overlay as well)
Then you paint over the area in color.

That must be a really gorgeous mare in real life! I can tell this because you did her such justice in your painting.
I wonder if before photography, paintings of horses were used to show conformation prior to purchase for foreign sales?

Simply beautiful plaguedog, I envy your artistic skills. The horse is so well done, at first when I say the image in my deviations I thought it was a photo of a horse, thats how realistic this is, not joke. And your backgrounds are stunning, I'd kill to have that type of talent. Grass and dirt , for me, is such a pain, yet you pull it off so smoothly and make it look easy. I'm just blown away with how much deviations you are able to get done, with such a high quality, and be a mother at the same time. Very impressive you are. I'll be waiting with anticipation for whatever you might create next.
