Description 3 views of a 12 pound painted rock...
maybe I would have approved of whaling had I lived in Melville's era & really needed my candles...
it's certainly hard to think well of it now...now that the ships are like destroyers...
I thought twice about including the whalers with their harpoons...(?)
...at first I painted the main ship with a dozen or so sails at about half the size of the longboat --
then painted over it...I thought this was a better visual (?)
...when I first found the rock, I was thinking of painting a bus on it... maybe I should have gone that way(?)

First time I've ever seen rock art like this and the way you managed to draw the whale and the whalers so that they can be seen from different angles i absolutely amazing.  I also liked Moby Dick and if your aim was to allude to the book I'd say you did it justice

Hi, I'm from Project Comment. This is a striking, emotional piece that shows a lot of potential. The expressiveness of this picture is its great strength. You conveyed a ton of emotion with just the whale's eyes, capturing its fear, apprehension and sense of persecution. Your use of contrasting colours stands out as well, with the garish red standing out on the chalk white of the whale's hide. This emphasises gruesomeness of the attack, and also the helplessness of the whale in contrast to the brutality of the hunters.

Your line work does a great job of pulling the viewer's eye towards the action, with the stern of the boat matching the angle of the harpoons. That said it does look a bit off with the rowers in the back of the boat. The lines on some of their oars are a little bit clumsy, and the fella at the back as rather bendy, rubbery looking arms. You might want to study some anatomy books to get the proportion and shape of the arms down. The boat itself could do with being a bit more streamlined, as it looks a little rounded which blunts an otherwise impactful picture.

That said this is a bloody good picture. Keep up the good use of colour, expression and direction, tighten up the line work a bit and you'll be in business. I can't wait to see more stuff from you, so keep going and good luck!
