Wow only just getting to comment but looks like I surfed over some drama, I really like the updated palette, it really brings the oozey shadowy monster out. Looks like I've got some stiff competition!

Drama, what drama? This ain't dA for nothing. Luckily it's all cleared up now. The monster came out a bit more drippy and oozy than originally intended, it was just supposed to be a creepy shadow at first, then it evolved into muk or something!

I was just poking fun at the whole skadoodle with Pushbomb and coldfusion, from your time on DA your a veteran and I, a mere rookie. But yeah, I saw the original palette as a shadow and it looks good as both shadow or oozey muk.

Alright who took their Tetris surfing on Cinnabar Island?
(PushBombShell doesn't seem to understand pixel art)

I'v been spriting for over 12 years (stated with terrible edits, then got into making my own sprites, albeit nothing amazing and recently I've been making sprites for a number of game projects, 2 my own and 1 for a group of friends making their leap into professional in game development), judging by your works you still have much to learn, you have many jagged lines and a fairly plain pallet (nothing horrid just you could do with a bit more depth.) I have no peeve with you, but in future if you have a problem with something I've said, discuss it with me, I may be able to elaborate on or fix something I had said.

i like jagged lines and plain palettes ^_^
you haven't seen my pixel art though (i'm guessing it's not as good as yours but for the record i've been spriting for roughly as long).. and you probably didn't see the best of my stuff.. not that anyone asked you to judge me.
but I've been -looking- at sprites for 20 years, and they've never had dithering. Not even the most ridiculously hi-res ones.

sorry about the judging, I took slight offence to the comment so my reply was a bit rash. I didn't mean to offend with the criticism, I swear when I want to offend XD. and I would be interested in seeing your best stuff, it was rude of me to judge based on 1 picture.
as for dithering its used in scenery and tilesets, and if done right you wont notice it at all in fact pokemon uses dithering all over the place in its tile sets. its a very important thing but very difficult thing to get right when doing tilesets, I still suffer from over dithering quite often.

Noprob, I was a bit out of line (but at least I didn't reply to your actual comment, that would've been harsh.). I guess I don't understand pixel art as well as I thought.
I'm going to take your word for it about the dithering, as I have the exact vision problems that would prevent me from noticing it. also PixelMecha told me the same thing.

Please don't be so needlessly harsh and critisize someone's work when they aren't asking for it on someone else completely's deviation. I'm sure Coldfusion was trying to be supportive of my work rather than a personal attack on you. Some people do just do art for fun and don't need to be told they "have much to learn" and flaunt how long you have been spriting or whatever, it comes over as a little conceited.

sorry, I took offence, I don't mean to offend back, I just found the comment quite arrogant, and as stated I'd rather peeves with what I say taken up with me.
I apologize for any disrespect, it was not intended.

That's okay, I think there's been a misunderstanding. Sorry for over-reacting, no harm's been done and thank you for the fair crits!

I was being a bit rude, a bad on my part, I have apologised. you didn't over-react, again I'm sorry I was so sour. your welcome for the criticisms, sorry if it wasn't wanted, I like to help where I think I may.

Honestly, it's fine, I've actually changed the image a bit in response to crits, and I think it's definitely made an improvement on it!

Yeah, I've had some serious trouble with the perspective because I decided to go for perspective other than isometric and now I wish I hadn't! Thanks for the crits, I think I'm going to do a bit more work on it now!

nice concept, but you have quite a few jagged edges and the angles dont match. you also lack any saturation change or hue shift, which will usually give your shading a much more natural feel, as for the shading clusters themselves their very inconsistent and I think the look your going for would work much better with some dithering.

PixelMecha In reply to PushBombshell [2012-06-10 21:37:57 +0000 UTC]
Thanks for the crits, I'm not too pleased myself about the "jagged edges", it's a result of attempting to do more "realistic" perspective rather than an isometric sprite. I see what you mean about the shading, though I was trying to go for a more limited colour pallette as a reference to the black and white colouration of the gameboy sprites, though actually now I have another idea which could add to the "gameboy graphics" idea...
Also, call me irrational, I tend to steer away from dithering because I find I can never pull it off in a way that I find pleasing. Maybe it's time I did step outside my comfort zone and give it a go!
