Few from top of my head and asked a friend, she recommended www.petesqbsite.com/sections/t⦠and my recommendation would be pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_pos⦠, there's a couple others around but I'm most familiar with these. Remember not to hold these as the gospel word, and you won't learn everything from them. I recommend studying all forms of pixel art, from nes/snes/mega drive/master system/ game boy/ really study how they are conveying their information through their style/form/shading. I'd also suggest pixelling small things at first, 48 x 48, 32 x 32, maybe 16 x 16 if you really want a challenge. Draw what interests you, remember to have fun with it, and just study everything in general too of course, anatomy/light/ and so forth.
Sorry for the big ol' wall of text reply but hope it helps!Β

PixelPowerLuke In reply to hahnt [2012-05-02 04:22:05 +0000 UTC]
Cheers =] my block style came from mostly the fact I don't like drawing hands or legs for walking cyc- I mean, it's more of an artistic choice ;D. Cheers for checking out my stuff, and you should definitely do some homage sprites,it's all good. I'll keep it up and you do the same.

A belated welcome to DeviantART, sir! Just had a look through the gallery - you've got a real talent for pixel art. Also, 105 deviations in three weeks - that's some fast movin'.

PixelPowerLuke In reply to cardgamerdebu [2012-04-28 19:03:54 +0000 UTC]
Thank you for the welcome =], just skimmed through your gallery myself and must say some very cool stuff indeed. As for my deviations, I kind of accumulated them and only just got back into the whole portfolio shin dig.
Also if you take out the lazy buffering of uploading bigger versions of other pixel art that number would go down a bit ;D haha. Thanks for checking me out.

Thank you for the compliment; always an honour to hear nice things from talented people.
What i was actually wondering was, is all the pixel work for 'games' (like your work for Autoscrollia) actually going into playable games, or are they examples of what the game would look like, if it was a game? I don't really know how to explain it, but i'm sure you know what i mean.
Anyway, keep on truckin' - looking good so far. You're already streets ahead of half of the mouth-breathers who clog up the site with Photoshop edits of cats, and pictures of their genetalia!
Oh, and for the record... if you'd have come to me ten years ago with the idea for Para-Amnesia, it's likely i would have made it into an adventure game. Good stuff!

No problem with the compliments, I give them when they are due ;D.
As for all the sprite stuff from Autoscrollia and such, they're all from my university work (I literally just finished a BA degree in games design and creative writing). I designed the games in Multimedia fusion 2 developer version (MMF) and they're prettier slap dash in terms of prototypes go, but they are playable.
I'm in the process of trying to get an e-portfolio going, and upload them to it ;D.
Also nice to hear Para-Amnesia is a decent idea ;D.
Will keep truckin'.

a) A Bachelor of Arts, eh? Congratulations, man - you might just be the next Shigeru Miyamoto!
b) I said 'ten years ago', because i went through a long period of writing my own graphic adventures, way back in the days of the Amiga. I grew up with classic LucasArts games like Monkey Island and Indiana Jones And The Fate Of Atlantis... real gaming. These days, i'm more about the consoles and Japanese games, but i know where my roots lie.

Yar, thanks for the congratulations =] and my pipe dream is to excel ol' Shiggy. It's a long shot, but the long shots are more impressive.
And I think everyone should play some point and click games, I mean where would we learn how to use rubber chickens with pulleys in the middle and three headed monkeys? Of course Grim fandango was another of my favourites. Also had my own fair share of Japanese titles, I'm always a big fan of the cult classics too, like Gitaroo Man. Love that game ;D.

a) Wow, that's a big dream. I know he's revered by people the world over, but when it comes down to it, character designers all over the world are doing what he's famous for. The difference is, he's got money and power behind him, so his work goes further and is seen by a wider audience.
b) *grins* Rubber chickens with pulleys in the middle... a staple of retro adventure gaming. And Gitaroo Man! I'm not very good at music-related games in general, but i thoroughly enjoyed GM... great tunes and graphical style. Plus, the dubbing wasn't horrible either, which is a bonus.

Big dreams are usually the best dreams. I go with a saying from George Carlin "I have as much authority as the Pope, I just don't have as many people who believe it." ;D, but yeah, I hope to break into the industry quite soon. I have an interview tomorrow with a company called Super Massive Games (they worked on stuff for Little big planet and such) and hopefully that goes well (first interview ever ARGH)
And yeah Gitaroo Man had this really beautiful unique artistic style, makes me think I wouldn't mind getting round to doing some cubey square versions of the characters xD. And indeed, decent dubbing is always a bonus, few and far between are games that get good dubbing/localisation.
