Now for something a little different. An Eastern Hunter Gatherer (EHG) woman... maybe... in more ways than one.

In 1936 in the Crimea in the grotto of Murzak Koba, archaeologists discovered the burial of a young Mesolithic woman (17,000 BP?) together with a 40+ year old man. Her little fingers were amputated during her lifetime. Archaeologists suspect the ritual was carried out for the purpose of magical "introduction" to the culture. The finger cutting ritual was also practiced by contemporaries of the era who lived in the area of modern Western Europe (as evidenced by archaeological research).

That's pretty much all I can find so far on her.

I'm assuming she's an EHG due to where she was found, but she could be a Caucasian Hunter Gatherer, who had moved north, or maybe part of the group that became the Early Iranian Farmers, or maybe some super far easterly Western Hunter Gatherer. Until we get a DNA profile on her we won't know.

The second thing being assumed is that she is a girl and not a boy. Archaeologists have assigned a sex based on her hip shape, but she was tall and robust and quite a few girl skeletons have turned into boys once the DNA is examined.
