Has to be my favorite Batman villain from the TV series totally deranged. Genius.Frank Gorshin is perhaps best know for his role as the Riddler which he portrayed superbly in the 1960s Batman TV series. Gorshin provided the character with the infamous high deranged cackle. Gorshin was also an adept impressionist and had a separate career on the Vegas scene and was famous for his Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster impressions. Gorshin had been a heavy smoker for most of his adult life, consuming up to five packs of cigarettes a day. He died in 2005 at the age of 72 of lung Cancer. Adam West claimed that "Frank could reduce a cigarette to ash with one draw." When he did nightclub performances or live shows, audiences were warned not to attend if they disliked smoking.

The big difference between Gorshin's and Astin's Riddler portrayal is Gorshin's was much more crazy whereas Astin's was a bit too serious for some.

Frank Gorshin was a hugely talented entertainer. His Riddler will NEVER be equaled. I remember watching those episodes as they first aired on T.V. Wow! The plots often involved capturing and imperiling Robin. This truly appealed to one's core instincts and made the Riddler seem truly villainous. Sweet. He was also a Great Voice Impressionist and many of his comic stage routines were so insightful as to be prophetic. I once read that he appeared on Ed Sullivan right behind the Beatles and was ignored during his Set. What a waste.

Gorshin was perfect for that role. Of all the time I spent as a kid watching that series, his performance is what stands out in my memory nearly 40 years later.
