Description By popular demand- a chart of the TARDIS' most memorable exteriors from over the years...

UPDATE: Thanks to everyone who alerted me to this- the pic made its way to Neil Gaiman himself! [link] And then when I sent him a "thank you", he threw my DA page a plug: [link] Classiest. Celebrity. Ever.

Needs Updating, and you've left a couple out. Β  Maybe should have morphed the roundels a bit too. Β  Bloody good anyway.

Cool; I love how close attention you've paid to the detail of how the TARDIS's police box exterior has chaned over the years. Do you intend to 'reissue' this after 'Day of the Doctor' to include the War Doctor's Time War-battered TARDIS like you did with your Cyberman pic after the Cybermen's redesign in Series 7?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PaulHanley In reply to SciFiLover2 [2014-12-31 22:20:37 +0000 UTC]

No, since it's placement after Idris would spoil the "joke" of the visual, plus its appearance is essentially a "one off" look- this picture's not meant to be a comprehensive account of every look the TARDIS has ever had. Β As it is, it's already missing the pink TARDIS from "The Happiness Patrol", the original configuration glimpsed in "The Name of the Doctor", and a ton of variant forms from "Attack of the Cybermen"- not to mention the slew of different ones in spinoff media. Β Trust me, I'm as OCD about this stuff as any other Who fan, but sometimes ya gotta keep those instincts in check.

I went to Wikipedia's description of the episode - they state the Tardis changes shape into an Iron gate, and anΒ ornamental stove(it looked like a 19th century organ to me I guess). No mention of the painted dressor/cabinet in the Wikipedia entry. Although I remember it as having the Master in the episode, that was not the case, so I must be rembering "Mark Of The Rani" asΒ  well. It must have been a different episode that the Master was calling him out on something. So you were right - it was "Attack of the Cybermen". Although it's been many years since I watched this episode too, It still stuck in my mind because it wasΒ  major toying with the appearance, and the only time I can remember anything close to this was when the 2nd Doctor and his companions were hanging on to the console, while the Tardis walls fly away. This is where I got the new information: www.thedoctorwhosite.co.uk/tar…

It still looks like an organ to me.

PaulHanley In reply to DJodyA [2014-01-27 05:21:18 +0000 UTC]

It did turn into an organ at one point (the Doctor even plays a few notes of "Tocatta and Fugue" on it): youtu.be/oVP1OxZ9nPk Β

In "Mark Of The Rani", the Doctor gets the Chameleon Circuit fixed - sort of. During the episode, we see the Tardis reconfigure it's appearance as a painted cabinet, a 19th century organ, and a fancy iron gate (none of which match it's surroundings as it's supposed to do). After that, it returns to it's original familiar appearance.

(Pedantic geek moment) It's actually "Attack of the Cybermen" that you're thinking of.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DJodyA In reply to PaulHanley [2014-01-24 19:30:10 +0000 UTC]

Really! I went to the trouble to to look it up, and it said it was "Mark of the Rani". I couldn't remember the name episode, but I did remember that the 6th doctor reluctantly joins forces with The Master. I remember the scene when everyone was exiting the painted dressor, the Master criticizes the Doctor for not having his Chameleon circuit stabilized. I guess I'll have to look at the episode guides again.

PaulHanley In reply to DJodyA [2014-01-25 00:06:06 +0000 UTC]

Been a couple years since I've seen "Mark", but that was probably the Rani's TARDIS they were traveling in. Β Six also hitched a lift in the Master's TARDIS in the last episode of "Trial of a Timelord".

Don't forget the episode during the Colin Baker era where he tries to fix the faulty Chameleon circuit, and it materializes as a few other objects before it returns to the familiar appearance.

when you look at the background, are the TARDISes actually in the TARDIS? Well, this is certainly an awesome piece. it is cool seeing all of them in a Row. have you ever considered drawing all of the TARDIS Console Rooms in a time line like this?

So, I've been using this as one of my wallpapers for a while, because it is just that awesome, but would you be okay with me making a Chrome browser theme out of it? With due credit, no alteration, and a link-back of course?

There's just soooo few Doctor Who themes for Chrome out there (and even fewer good ones), and this is one of the best fanart depictions of the TARDIS in a while - the fact that people are still finding it and reblogging it over a year after it was made says something.

The app I have for making Chrome themes allows me to leave the art completely intact with no alteration, via a particular "fit to screen" option - in this case (because of the dimensions) making it with this option means that when you opened a new tab while using that theme, the complete image would be on the bottom of the screen, under all your icons for Chrome apps. The toolbar and active and inactive tabs, as well as the background behind the apps' icons, would be in coordinating colors (in this case, I would go with some nice blues and greys).

When you create, save and upload a theme using this app, it allows you to place a bit of optional description under the theme's title. What I propose, in exchange for the privilege of using this lovely piece of art, is using the following for the "optional description: "Artwork used with permission of Paul Hanley. Original here: " and then the URL of this very page.

The theme would then pop up in searches for Doctor Who-themed Chrome themes with that description very visibly attached to it.

For the record, themes are free, or at least this one would be; it would be usable for free by anyone using the Chrome browser, and I would make absolutely zero money off of it. Just in case you were worried I was doing this out anything but geeky love.

I can provide you with screengrabs of the proposed theme if you want them, and, if you okay the creation of it, I can link you to it here.
