Description This is my second attempt at making the Attack on Titan/ Shingeki no kyojin 3D Maneuver Gear. I actually like how it turned out. I tweaked the design a bit, compared to my first attempt. It took me a couple of days to figure out how the lower torso is supposed to be set up, but it was well worth it. The center waist belt buckle was the closest to accurate as I could find, having the two prongs instead of the regular single pronged belt buckle that Eren has.

There are still two more small belts left, and they're the ones that go around the knees.

Time to take a break for now. *pats self on back*

It's made from vegan tanned leather. Still needs to be dyed and clear coated.

That's amazing! Dear Sir, (if you're still following this thread by any chance) may I ask you some questions about the construction? I'm trying to make a harness myself but got stuck with that "figuring out what goes where" thing.

Hello, just a question, where did you get the belt buckles?

I shop at this place in downtown L.A. called Sav-mor leather. They're really friendly and know their stuff when it comes to leather.

Do you dye after assembly? And if you don't mind my asking, what dyes and finish do you use? Those are some seriously long straps...

I assemble, disassemble, dye, dry, dye, dry, dye, dry, clear coat, dry, clear coat, dry, polish, assemble, oil and flex, then let stand.

Each of those steps is approximately a day. Specially dry time, you wanna make sure it fully cures/crystallizes inside the leather, cause sometimes the dye drys lighter, which gets worse once its under a clear coat, which means you can't fix it.

I also picked really long pieces of leather when I was assembling it. These actually only go til under the knees.

Wow. Amazing work Im completely inspired by this...

Question: Can you tell me exactly the name of those square pieces that the belts go through? Right where they cross around the thighs and the bigger one on the back.
Can I buy those somewhere? or would I have to physically make them?

Also- wholesale belts like this: www.thebeltwholesale.com/men_3...
Would this be some what usable to make the harness?

Aah. Sorry ._. I'm totally lost here, so I have alot of questions.

I made everything from scratch. the square side pieces are placeholders. The holster for the swords are meant to replace those. So you don't have to worry about them.

Everything else, you're gonna have to make. They're kinda made specifically for the 3DMG.

If you're a small person, and you don't have experience with leather work, this'll be okay.(referring to the link)
If you're a little on the hefty side, which I am, the next couple of months will be hell.

look for a belt with 1 inch in width, you need a minimum of 15. make that 17, if you really want to be sure. You only need 7 of these buckles.
Also look for a belt with the buckle with two prongs. Thats the belt for the waist.
pick the longest that you can get the belts. you need the length.

Leatherwork Shopping list:
needles
waxed nylon thread
leather hole punch

You need those to make the triangle darts for the front buckle that goes over the chest. Seriously, thats a main part of the design that most people overlook, because they the have jacket over it. (details are a pet peeve)

Its a money pit. The one I made had a budge of about 100. Plus a weeks work, which was about 20 hours minimum. The profit margin was low to keep it competitive, and it was a friend of a friend.

I'm not discouraging, I just want to prep you for the worse. It's gonna be a long journey ahead.

Whoa. Thanks for this seriously informative reply! [Trust me, I'm far from discouraged; I'm more excited now]

Yeah - I'm a bit hefty myself, so I've PRE-prepared myself for this journey

I guess I don't necessarily /have/ a budget, but $80-100 sounds about my range, so I should be good.

I'm inexperienced with this kind of stuff, so everything is experimental for me.

And because of that, I'm starting hella early. I'm not debut this cosplay until next year, so I've got some time from now until then...

Thanks again!

You sound like me. XD My debut of my Mikasa cosplay is going to be at the tail-end of May at SoDak Con. I JUST now started work on the harness. I am nervous about it, but excited. So far I have two of the thigh straps done, a third nearly finished and a fourth cut and ready to be altered and sewed. The next step will be figuring out the lower straps to the feet, and then moving upwards from there, as I still need the large back support piece, but I don't have a ton of money to spend on the really heavy, thick pieces right now. This will probably take me about a month between making props, too.

So, I read that you are no longer taking commision for this, but I still want, so I'm going to try and see if i can make one myself, I have never done leatherwork before. Can you give me any tips or guides on how you did this???

passbyguy In reply to TeTeStar [2013-07-14 05:02:57 +0000 UTC]

Sure I can give you tips on how to make them. what were you looking into? or what items did you think you'd need?

Thanks for replying! How did you get the belts to link together?? I might not necessarily use leather because it seems to be out of my price range, but I still want to keep the general same shape and color.

passbyguy In reply to TeTeStar [2013-07-14 22:32:19 +0000 UTC]

the only section that's actually permanently linked together, is the front of the chest. the two triangle sections to the sides of the buckle are sewn on. the rest slot together with the use of the smaller leather pieces.

Thanks for the interest, but I have to politely decline. I'm backed up with commissions as it is. When I can, I'll take up more commissions again.

It's just so awesome I want to buy! (evenifihavenomoneyIwouldsendmyfatherandbuyyouthis) e.e I'm extremely looking forward on cosplaying SnK :,c I'd love to live in another country... it's just so expensive and difficult to find in here TT^TT Sorry to bother you, I went out of theme

Its alright. Isn't leather cheap or at least more affordable near you? I saw on your page that you were from Argentina. I believe if you can find a source somewhere locally, you could probably make this yourself at a reasonable price. I can just give you tips and stuff. If you want.

The trouble is... even though we are manufacturers of leather and stuff... our economy management is so stupid that we have to pay triple the price of the money you spend in any other place in the planet(?) I'm kidding, but things are pretty much unaffordeable here... Trying to get $100 US dollars is almost imposible, and before any hobby-use we want to give to our money, we have to pay taxes ;_; (I cry cus I wanna be a cosplayer and I don't even live in Buenos Aires where you can find some stuff :c)

aww. that sucks to hear that. but its okay, most of the 3d maneuver gears I have seen have been made with pleather or fake leather. even a few made of fabric. so there are a lot of potential solutions. just takes a little imagination.

Looks really nice! I used black straps for securing things. Like for camping. They got tangled pretty badly because it was kinda messy xD How long did this take? And how sturdy is it?

passbyguy In reply to Zer0de [2013-06-10 20:50:29 +0000 UTC]

It took about a week to figure the whole thing out. It's really sturdy i'd say. individually, each piece can be used as an actual belt, so times that by the 18 belts that make up the 3DMG, that's seems pretty sturdy to me.

Zer0de In reply to passbyguy [2013-06-10 21:43:48 +0000 UTC]

Damn I bet it stays on nice too. Does it go on and off fairly easily? It took me like 30+ minutes to get mine on.

once fully adjusted to the body, its just a matter of slipping off the crossed belts in front, the center belt, and the one of the chest.

omg, YOU ARE AMAZING. As a newbie to making props, how do you come to design such amazing pieces?!

passbyguy In reply to fredapod [2013-06-05 19:24:08 +0000 UTC]

Welcome to prop making! I didn't really design anything on this, there were a lot of reference pictures and screen caps from the show available to me. The only hard part was figuring out what went where, and how to scale it.

With leather, its usually the size of available buckles, snaps, rivets... etc. that determine how you're end product will end up.

Best advice I can give to you is to find your medium. Whether it be leather, metal, foam, resin, plastics or fabric. It's that one thing that you can bend to your will, with just a little know-how and you'll quickly notice if you have a knack for it or not.
