Description I'm so sorry these are kind of awful, but they're good for experimentation.

Luther is the party's raging alcoholic--I mean buff guy--I mean paladin. Starting out as a villain, he joins the party half through blackmail and half through his own personal code of honor. Or maybe that's the same thing? Nobody really knows. He doesn't usually talk that much unless it's in furious battle cries or screams. Or if he's making a quasi pedophilic face. Or Phil Collins.

was pretty fun practice drawing upward shots of noses, buff dudes and beards. It's kind of sad when you realize one day you have no idea how a beard works. But it's been a pretty long time since I've drawn anyone buff, so that was fun.

I read Uther...

this guy kind of looks like a young uther lightbringer... but with a beard.

seriously why was there so much phil collins in Tarzan?

when did elton john even write a song for the lino king?

It's ironic because the character originated from WoW. I chose the name Luther originally based on Martin Luther and all that... and then went "OH WAIT HA HA REMOVE AN L HEY IT'S UTHER."

I stuck with it because the name Luther kind of grew on me.

AND SERIOUSLY. Who sat down, watched Tarzan and thought, "HEY, YOU KNOW WHAT WOULD MAKE THIS MOVIE BETTER? Phil Collins. NO WAIT WHAT WOULD MAKE THIS MOVIE -EVEN BETTER- IS THAT IF EVERY SONG WAS DONE BY PHIL COLLINS. PERFECT."

At the very least there was only one Elton John song in the lion king. I like Elton John and all but god damn if I had to hear him crooning hakuna matata throughout the entire damn film I'd stab myself.

I couldn't have said it better myself... about the disney part.

For Luther, seeing as these are rough sketches I guess it all depends on the colour choices you choose to put on him, Uther's always blue and gold like a silly Lordaeron paladin. Plus I've seen you draw Uther.

I'm hoping that'll be a big part that separates him. I think Uther has peppered hair/brownish hair. Luther's a redheaded stepch--man. His outfit was supposed to be based off of a roman soldier, so a lot of red. Maybe white. I was thinking gold, but then might be too similar to Uther.

I've gotten myself into a project to work on some comics and I have trouble drawing the characters consistently, so I can really appreciate pages like this.

You'd be amazed how lenient the human eye is to consistencies. It's why there are a lot of comments about how "oh your character looks so much like (insert other character here)!!" Though yeah, there's only so far you can push a character, hahaha.

Doing these definitely helps. I have an issue where I design a character, and while I'm working on illustrations with them, they wind up altering and becoming easier to draw. So they change. And... change pretty dramatically from their original incarnation. So that's another reason I do these--so I can get some of that character morphing/simplification out right at the start!

Cranky buff dudes are pretty much awesome! There is nothing wrong with drawing that, I used to draw close to nothing but for a looong time.

Wow, I just realized I may have abused my parentheses quota when I typed that first comment. Ah well.

Parentheses quotas can always stand to use more abuse. Same with semicolons and hyphens.

I use way too many semicolons; it's a hobby.

Man, your sketches are amazing! This guy has an awesome shape all around. I love his detailed nose and chunky arms and thighs, and of course that beautiful hair.

Oooh, and his thighs are delightfully chunky too! I can't draw that kind of leg muscle without it looking ridiculous, so kudos.

Palidoozy In reply to TamsTheGenkiQueen [2011-12-28 17:26:39 +0000 UTC]

haha, thanks! I've been really trying to practice noses lately, because it kind of dawned on me--I have almost no idea how they work. A bunch of Disney movies/anatomy references later, I think I have a better idea!

Oh goooood I'm glad you think the legs look alright. I was having a really hard time with it, actually. I find it's a lot easier for some reason to make legs in motion that big than standing still, but y'know.

Hah just noticed I mentioned the thighs twice lol what.

Disney movies are great for nose reference! If you want some truly awesome examples, you should check out *chira-chira 's art. So many glorious nostrils. xD

Yes, the legs look wonderful. Give yourself a pat on the back!

Yesss, I'm actually watching them. I love their noses, and their linework is super smooth!

Yeah, I'm finding I'm learning a lot more from Disney movies than when I first began drawing and whatnot. I remember first drawing, I thought noses were the ugliest part of the face and sought to rid of them. Now I think they're pretty awesome, and while the eyes, mouth, hair and jaw can distort in shape dramatically depending on what emotion you're trying to show, a nose remains pretty much consistent (with some minor scrunching here and there!). So recently I've started trying to make the nose the really different part of the face between characters in light of that. Well, for personal stuff, at least.

whoo ramble ramble.

TamsTheGenkiQueen In reply to Palidoozy [2011-12-31 04:33:39 +0000 UTC]

Yeahhh man. 8D I used to just slap a Sailor Moon-lookin' nose onto characters when I was younger because, yeah, it was the most annoying part of the face. Now it's my favorite to draw, maybe even more so than the eyes (almost)! I love when people are drawn with noses scrunching here and there. The little crinkly lines add so much character.

Oh pshh, I could ramble on about these things all the livelong day.

Palidoozy In reply to TamsTheGenkiQueen [2011-12-31 07:13:59 +0000 UTC]

Oh I hear you! Yeah, it was the same for me. I drew super anime style noses and whatnot.

I actually managed to dig up some mega old pictures of mine, and for funsies, managed to actually find the same character!

[link] This was drawn about 2004-2005, so six-seven years ago. Note the nose.

[link] This was drawn in 2007-2008. By this point I had been most of the way through college. She developed an actual nose by this point. It's kind of hard to see, but I still didn't really add nostrils.

[link] This was drawn about 5 minutes ago. There are now noseholes. PEOPLE CAN BREAAAATHE.

I can totally ramble about this sort of stuff. I'm really passionate/neckbeardy about the intricacies of style and character design, haha!
