that looks awesome!Β
may i ask how it preforms for shock absorption? also, how do you securely fit something like this to the tang? Β

Swordking,
The tang has been forged down to end as a threaded bolt.
That big circular machined pommel block is a counterweight for balance.
It is threaded to fit the circular pommel block.
The section just beneath the pommel block is a cylinder cut at a precise measurement(length) to allows those two top pieces to rotate until tight just at the spot where it aligns nicely in the same plane as the quillon block..
Shock absorption is another issue entirely.
As long as the parts stay tight there is little vibration but in truth I have never tested this pristine blade by striking it on anything...

Thank you Mikke.
The weight actually helps balance the sword...

It helps? how heavy is just a the blade? Pommel should be enough.. is the handle made from a tube which has been circumvented??

The handle is forged hollow square tubing.

Just out of curiosity, how comfortable is that to grip? It looks as if it would need it's user to wear a glove.

It's actually quite comfortable, but it is also true that most would in fact have a glove on when fighting with a hand-and-a-half or "bastard"sword...

Wow, I love the handle. It reminds me of my "Geo Aegis" sword design's handle.

There is a indeed similarity...
As regards your Geo Aegis design;
Looks good,I have a couple of simple criticisms I hope you'll tolerate and consider.
1. You envision a 3/8 thickness and I don't think it needs to be quite that thick. The resultant weight may be inhibitory for all but the largest men.
2.The contraposto horns or spikes at the end of the twist on the grip(the pommel) will be a danger for the wielder of such a sword. If you curl them back toward the grip they will still be functional for a defensive blow (pommeling),but not so dangerous for the "operator".
I have here given unsolicited criticism and as such etiquette tells me I am out on a limb and I know it...I do this only out of RESPECT for your design capabilities. I sincerely hope you are not offended as that is not my intention. As I say to everyone who elicits comment from me,"use what is helpfull and simply disregard the rest".
Nice to see your work by the way...

Hey, no problem man, constructive criticism is openly welcome. I see your point on the pommel, however, with a solid metal handle (rather than a wooden one) the weight should be very well balanced, even with a 3/8" thick blade. The metal acts as a much better counterweight, reducing the need for an unnecessarily long handle or too large of a pommel.

I am beginning to think there is nothing in metal that you cannot make or have not done so. You totally amaze me with the breadth of your creativity. Hard to tell on the pommell is it shiny or have an inlay of some kinda glass or gem?

No it's just caught the light on that one flat spot. I turned it on the lathe out of a solid chunk of steel, then drilled and tapped so it would accept the threaded tang, which was a pain in the butt because the sword blade is from Europe so the threads were metric (6mm I think).
I sold this piece to a dear friend who is a very petite and delicate looking woman but has the warrior princess fantasy going on in her head. It will be interesting to see if she actually gets some training. She sure would be beautiful to watch, she's very graceful...

It allowed a lighter pommel while still accomplishing a practical balance.
It is quite unorthodox however,I'll admit...
And requires some maintenance to keep from rusting.

How does it feel to grip?
(I've made two shorter swords and both felt kind of awkward to handle due less then great grips.)

ou8nrtist2 In reply to RelativelyBest [2007-09-16 22:38:06 +0000 UTC]
Well it felt great,
I used to work out with it till my instructor perished in a head on. Addicted to speed(his Kawasaki).
But a steel grip is not usually what one would logically choose for sure.
I sold it to a wonderful woman who fancies herself a warrior princess, but methinks it'll remain a wall piece for her till she learns to become emotionally self sufficient. The Way of the Warrior is not just for fighting.
But you know that already...

OH well I guess you missed it then. Yes it is a made for tv movie on the sci fi channel. Don't know if you can get it off the internet or not. The sword and the fact that it was posted so close to the movie just made me think about it.

Yes I think that lots of people are into the renaissance fairs and fantasy movies and gaming have made them more popular. I suppose we should be thankful that a lot of these people don't know how to use them could be dangerous I suppose. Its a little taste of a romanticized past that people think would have been better and more exciting that today and they feel that sort of ties them to those times I think. Of course, most of them wouldn't last long back then. Just think of all the germphobic people of today back in the renaissance period where you were darn lucky if the street in front of your house didn't double as the sewer. Can you imagine what they would do?

Heheheh,
Right you are...
I'm laughing because I have several very close friends that are quite sensitive that way and it always makes me chuckle under my breath when they come to visit because often my house looks like chaos. It's CLEAN mind you, just not organized...but then, my saliva kills EVERYTHING (hereditary trait).LOL

lol I hear you. You should see my house. That little sign 'clean enough to be healthy and dirty enough to be happy' well I suppose it fits. No one has gotten sick in my house, at least not from it although some might worry a bit. I live in the desert and have three medium to large dogs. My house will never be clean. Plus I'm the farthest thing from suzi homemaker so I'm doomed to have a messy not real clean house. Dust storm came through the other day must've dropped an additional 1/2" of dust on everything. Everything feels gritty now. I'm certainly not germphobic.
