I really dig the vibrant range of colours that you're using here!
You've indicated that you want critique on this piece, so here's my two cents...
While I do like your boldness with colour, I think you have too much of that going on. Using such intensely saturated colour throughout a piece is usually not as visually effective as playing around with both bold and subdued colours throughout a piece. Every subdued patch of paint that you apply to a canvas makes your bold colours pop that much more! Alternating between the two is a great tool for making a painting more dynamic.
I played around with your image in Photoshop to see if I can make myself clearer:
[link]
the first image is your painting that I desaturated. While you have a lot of contrast in terms of hue -- that is, red vs. green vs. blue vs. yellow -- your contrast is underdeveloped in terms of value, or lights vs. darks. If you really want your subject to pop out against the background, it's a good trick to take a photo of your composition, edit it digitally into grayscale, and inspect how much contrast is going on.
the second image is your painting with original colours, and the following two are slightly tweaked versions attempting to demonstrate what I'm talking about.
Um, unfortunately I got distracted by a somewhat distressing phonecall, and I have a lot on my mind now, so I'm not going to go into any more detail, but I hope you understand what I'm talking about here.

I'm so sorry to hear about your distressing phone call...................................I can't say anything else about it because I have no idea what it was about, but I hope that all is well or well enough.
Now I want to thank you really graciously for your interest in my work, so much so that you would dedicate some of your valuable time (yes it is valuable because it gets more expensive by the minute) to Photoshop my work in order to edify me about contrast THANK YOU SO MUCH!
The thing is, it's a painting, and most of my paintings are too big to scan, so the only way I'm able to show them to the world is by taking pictures of them. Now when you're taking pictures of a painting, especially mine with so much paint layered on, the slightest light causes glare, no matter what angle you take it from, and inadequate light makes for a low quality photo. That glare instantly eliminates contrast and you would be surprised to know the actual painting looks more like your photoshopped versions.
In the real deal, that bright area at the front of the bird is a lot easier to digest and the dark areas are darker. I took over 10 pics of this painting trying to get it right, but I observed that the camera exaggerated my blues and I just couldn't get the lighting of the photo right. So I guess I can blame the camera.
Here I would kindly request that you spare me some more of your well appreciated time to suggest the perfect settings for a better picture of a painting. It doesn't really bother me much, I just wanna paint.
You're the first person to go so far to offer me some help I thank you again.

Don't worry about the phone call, it was just a late-night call from my very drunk boyfriend who was (understandably) extremely pissed off because a friend of his was robbed that night. I just got upset because of how angry he was, and because I failed at getting him into a better mood, but it's not a particularly big deal. I just got too emotional to critique any further, haha.
It's nice to hear that you appreciated my critique (even though if your painting looks more like my touch-up in real life, I didn't really tell you anything new)
I don't know if I can be as useful to you in terms of advice regarding photography of paintings. I don't know if you've looked through my gallery at all, but most of my stuff is poorly photographed, hahaha. Anyway, the advice that I've heard most frequently in terms of lighting is to go outside on a sunny day, put your painting into solid shade, and photograph it there. it obviously helps to have an expensive camera, a tripod, etc. Personally, if I had any photographer friends and wanted to get professional shots of my work, I'd just ask them to help me out.
lastly, I'm just curious as to how big this painting is, because it kind of looked to be a scannable size to me.

I only use acrylic paints, using only the primary colours to mix into colours of choice. You're welcome...... no I mean Thank YOU!

This is really beautiful - so vibrant and lush. Full of life! It's got heart - he feels like a wild parrot.
I would consider retaking the photo with the right kind of flash setup so you don't get the glare off the paint. I know there's ways to do it better than I could tell you. Look it up. Your work deserves to be show off every brushstroke.
Thanks!
