Description Finished at last!

two lone planets are caught in a maelstrom of star forming activity, dominated at the centre by an immense pillar of gas and dust many light years high.

this piece is dedicated to everyone who helped me reach my 1000 page views, and to anyone who has 'd or 'd me in the past, thanks everyone!

the original WIP can be found at [link]

's are much appreciated, as always...

EDIT1: Some minor tweaks to get rid of some rogue layer edges (thanks bloknayrb for pointing them out), plus softening off some hard lines...

EDIT2: added a little bit more atmosphere to the big planet, removed border lines...

This isn't the pillar you are thinking of, I think.

Not bad at all. I love the colors, and the texture of the nebula, you may have to teach me cause I really like that.

Awsome job Only thing that you might want to change is to have a veriety of star brightnesses, they all look the same.

this is great pic totally

but your starfield looks a little simple...

but the nebula or what ever it is, looks absolutely beatiful

Great work, I really like the depth and feel of this piece.
My only critique is that some of the small bright stars start to look a little too uniform, the constant shape is obvisously part of the theme, but toward the bottom of the deviation it just felt like their could be more shape variation.
I really like the planets, and the lighting and clouds are especially nice, you get a good sense of space, distance, and size.

thanks very much. I agree with what you think about the starfield, in my opinion (as ive said already further up ^) i could definitely have spent a bit more time on it. This piece started out as a bit of an experiment, so i think i just did a fairly simple starfield and then sort of forgot about it

still, i dont think its too bad, its just not as good as it could be...

It's still a good starfield, my comments might just seem worse since it was the only thing I could think to critique

p.s. I assume you're a Halo fan considering the title?! (I like it, it suits the piece)

tbph i hated halo, but i will refrain from ranting about its mediocre, repetative gameplay here... *ahem*

but yes, ive played it and i liked the name pillar of autumn. The name came before the art in this circumstance. i.e i took the name and based the pic around it (pillar of gas, autumn colours)

hey, hey, hey.... nice work dude!! That nebula is bloody sexy!!

I have two slight criticisms of this piece. Firstly, the starfield seems a little too sparse considering the detail in the rest of the piece, and secondly, the large planet could do with being a little sharper. The nebula is so good, it seems a shame to let it down with the rest of the work.
However, these are only my opinions and there is so much good about this piece, such as the layout (very well thoughtout); the lighting (seems pretty realistic to me); the nebula (groovy brushwork here); the planets (apart from the focus mentioned above, they look lovely); etc....

Omicron- In reply to vitamin-c [2005-06-13 23:46:03 +0000 UTC]

thanks very much. I did sharpen the planets, tho maybe not quite enough... and as for the starfield, i could certainly of spent longer on it, but i think i was too focused on trying to make the nebula look good, that i sort of neglected the stars... will have to remember that they are just as important for my next space piece...

my next pic, incidentally is already in the works, title is 'The Flying Fortress' and its a semi speedpaint pic, make of that what you will everyone

the middle stars...erm..a tad but too bright :S, and the other ones all look the same, try to keep a variation between the large stars (the visible ones). anyways other htan that the brushing is awesome. keep it up!

Hmm not much too critique about this piece.. good perspective and a fresh idea.. just some things I would improve is the lighting on the planet .. and the right cloud structure .. maybe remove that. it adds a bad persona to the image

Very cool image! Great composition and sense of scale (something that ironically seems to be missing from a lot of space art). I think some of the stars near the edges of the clouds would be dimmer because of the overpowering light from the center of the scene. The black "scratches" in the red cloud under the moon seem a bit distracting.

Omicron- In reply to SixStringer [2005-06-12 22:54:30 +0000 UTC]

i see what you mean about the scratches, i guess they do stand out a bit, but personally i dont mind them too much. Thanks very much for the positive comment

The nebula technique is great, but i would recommend possibly adding more space dust, and varying the stars in brightness abit. Overall very nice...

Sweet work on the planet texture and lighting, no crits here. The scale is fantastic as well, that huge planet is looking so small compared with the nebula. That's how it should be
