I think the art is beautiful, but I'm not sure I'd agree with the concept you present. Yes, mothers are nearly the epitome of love and could sacrifice alot to ensure the survival of their offspring. However, this is not entirely true. Sometimes a mother will give the child away out of great love. That does not mean they are a worse mother and shouldn't have done it. This all depends on the circumstance.
A mother sees what is best for their offspring. If it cannot live a fruitful life under her care, then it must be spared and seperated. This is most true in humans.
In the wild, a mother will do as much as she can to protect its offspring, except sacrifice herself. I do understand that there are occasional cases in which the mom does give up her own life to let the other live, but it is few and far between. I bison is a big and powerful animal that is quite capable of defending itself and its young against predators like wolves; this is especially true because of the herd size that tends to exist. A 700+/- pound buffalo with its herd as backing could save the child. Alone, it would do what it could till its own life was threatened too much and left it for nature. This, in itself, is nature's way. The first law of nature is to Survive at all costs. A wolf eats to survive. A mother will abandon its young in the face of extreme danger to survive. A mother will give its child to adoption to survive.
I know, this is more of a discussion topic for a journal than something relating to the artwork you're presenting, I just thought I'd share. Sorry if I offend!

wow... the look of shear determination in momma bison's stare into the heart of the wolf is so powerful!
i don't get the whole "babies having babies" thing. seriously. i hope your friend all the very best-but sadly, i have known dozens of young women all like her. they get pregnant, (unplanned, of course) and then nothing is important anymore. as if the only thing they can look forward to in life is motherhood. well, it's not easy. and it's no garuntee the guy will stick around, too. absolutely not 1 of the many young women I know who had a child before they turned 25 are still with the father of their child. it's a sad fact. the guys cut ties and bail, because they, too, are babies.
love is powerful-i have beeen with my boyfriend since i was 20 (now i'm 31) and we decided early on NO BABIES until we grew up. now he wants a baby and i'm still in school-so he knows that i won't allow it to happen until I am done with my goals. i mean, i'd like to at least have something to show my child that i accomplished prior to bringing them into the world. guess that's because my mother was a jr. high-school drop out to have me... she was only 16 when she had me... been married 3 times... and my boyfriend's mother was 16 too, and now she's going thru her 4rth divorce. i just wish young women would see that there is soo much more to accomplish in life, so much personal potential to use, before starting a family... and boys come and go. i want to be happy-but unfortunately, most young mommies struggle, and eventually feel like they wish they'd have waited. so sad.

I think it's a great thing when a couple commits to wait and both respect that decision. It always seems to turn out better for the family--you're more prepared, both emotionally and financially, for the responsibility of raising a child. It's depressing to see women give up their goals in order to support a family. It seems so backwards to me. :\ So supercongrats on your decision; it definitely sounds like the right one to me! XD

oh Nylak... it's so lovely... When we go out to our old ranch in austin texas you see cougar's killing the longhorn calves all the time (not to mention baby horses, deer, ect). And those longhorns, just like the wonderful bison protect those baby's as much as they can. Nylak, this is the best thing, or my favorite thing iv'e ever seen you do. It has a WOW factor, good job.

That's so ferociously depressing sometimes--I'm all for nature and survival-of-the-fittest and crap, but it's super hard to watch babies get killed, eh? Especially when their parents try their best to prevent it. Gah. I wish you could just chase after the darn baddies and be all "Shoo!" Like they were your pet cat picking on a chipmunk or something. *cough*
I'm not strange.
Anyway. Thanks for the comment; I appreciate it! ^__^ *cling*

The result is as amazingas I imagined it would be! Congrats! Thsi is gorgeous, I'm charmed! Your description is very fitting too. I myself saw too lots of friends unde 18 pregnant. It's intresting that even with little age, women can be really good mother and o everything, even ruining their futeures, for their babies...
Please, kepp working like this! You rocks!

I know, it amazes me. I still consider myself super immature, and a child myself in a lot of ways...I can't imagine being saddled with the responsibility of bringing up a child when I feel I still have a lot of learning to do myself. Some people certainly are impressive...if that's the right word for it.
Thanks for the comment! ^___^

I'd vote for this but I entered myself. I hope you win though, you’ve put a lot of thought and attention in this. And, it's so wonderful when an image has special meaning in it, I can really relate to what a mother’s love it capable of doing for a child. But you'd also be surprised what a child's love with do for a mother--It really is the strongest relationship on the planet in my opinion, and I like how you focused on pure love instead of the typical romantic.
Take care now.

Haha, thanks. ^__^ I used a brush I drew on my own at first--about a dozen different ones, actually, to mix it up a bit. But I just couldn't get it to look right. So in the end I blurred the layers I'd used brushes on and redrew over them by hand. I'm still not really pleased with the grass overall, but I was too exhausted to change anything at this point, really. XD

Wow, this is absolutly amazing. @_@ I could stare at it for hours... If PS kept freezing on me, I would have just given up. xD Kudos to you for sticking with it. ^^
Did you work on many different layers, or do more of a painting style and only use a few?

Nylak In reply to Jorjuh [2007-04-19 22:01:49 +0000 UTC]
I am a layer whore! XD I used about a grand total of 35-40 layers, saving the image as different files so I could merge some of them as I went. I wish I could let go of using them, but really, layers are why I like digital painting over real media so much--it's so forgiving!
